Chinese metric hinges take a 6mm rod. 1/4" is too big and 3/16 too flimsy. A 40d nail is about 5mm.

You really think you are going to break a 3/16" steel rod in this application? It's only 1/4 mm less - 4.76mm. If you want it to stay put better, then just bend a kink or an S into it to add some spring friction in the barrel.

Just a thought - it may be a lot easier to find...

And BTW - that looks like a very handy setup. Nice work

I'll compare the two when I go back looking again.

$13 a bit pricey for a little piece of stamped sheet metal. thanks for the link though.

I bought the 3/16 rod, mainly because I was at TSC already, they didn't have nails, and I didn't want to do the Lowes fight again.

Haywire
You seem pretty skittish about the price of the fittings, but didn't spare any $ with the treated lumber used. Just a bit puzzled as that much lumber seems overkill for the job at hand.

Not meaning to put down a good build however. Maybe just the over-investment leaving you with little cash to work with now. :)

Dang... that was my last nerve too. Now it's all flat with your hoof prints all over it. I ordered that one special from Argentina. Had a heck of a time getting through customs. They're a bit touchy about bio-matter crossing borders.

I don't blame Haywire at all. I, too, spend the extra bit for PT lumber for things I build, like the carryall box, since I don't have indoor storage for my equipment, and I want this stuff to last despite exposure to lots of wet.
He's also right about those little brackets being expensive (so I'm just as happy to have found another solution when I built my carryall box), but I'm sure they are just the right thing to have in certain circumstances.
