George,

I would not dig up your big rock base (that's called #2 here in Ohio). It makes an excellent base to put the crusher run on top of.

I've had the same thing where even #4 disappeared into the clay.

Are you sure you can't get the trucks to "tailgate" their load? That's what they call it here, trying to lay down a (roughly) even load over a 100' or so.

Start with that and the landscape rake will do a good job, quickly.

I've posted about it elsewhere on TBN. Perhaps your crusher run is similar to what we call 3/4" base. It goes over the bigger stuff and hopefully locks in what with the fines. Also what we use under concrete, finished with a vibrating tamper before pouring. I found getting this "tailgated" and finished with my landscape rake much better than with my boxblade. Recently I've added hydraulic TnT and can do an even better job. Heck, even the wife complimented me after the last dressing

Yes, they do tailgate it....that's what I meant by dump-and-go...I didn't know the proper term for it. Ken, I'm not going to remove the big stone, it just needs to be redistributed and leveled out a bit.
