I have a plow for my JD 4120 which works okay, but my driveway is steep. The plow seems to leave enough "fuzz" that once it gets packed down, the tractor can't drive back up the driveway.

I've found plenty of 12V salt spreaders for the back of pick up trucks, but it seems like it would be a better, more durable, more powerful set up to use the PTO.

Are there 3 point hitch mount, PTO driven salt spreaders available?

After poking around on the forum, I seem to have found some that are for seed or fertilizer,
not sure which ones if any of these would be good for salt?

Just my opinion, but I had a full size western salt spreader for my mason dump, and while it worked great, I had problems with corrosion etc. I was always greasing the conveyor, cleaning out salt and sand from around the bed. A three point pto driven one would be the same, in my opinion. I like the plastic ones, because they won't rust, and can be cleaned with a hose. They are lighter, thus easier to handle. No more scraping, and painting the rust spots. and I have even seen two yard plastic dump truck spreaders.

I wouldn't be afraid of a 12v spreader. They are very reliable an purpose built for salt. My concern with a PTO spreader would be slowing it down enough to keep the spread pattern within the width of the driveway. Something like a SnowEx 575 would be perfect for the job.

I have a salt spreader for my ATV. I quit using it because the salt was eating off the back end of my ATV.

The smallest Vicon Pendulum spreader(400 pounds capacity) can be used for sand or salt with a specific nozzle for the delivery of sand and salt.
They are more costly but the pendulum spreader will last a more than a life time and can be used on other tractors with no issues.

The Vicon will also have a high resale value if and when the time comes.

The Vicon Pendulum spreader has a heavy plastic hopper to prevent corrosion
of the hopper and sticking of material.

Some of the spinner broadcaster brands have plastic hoppers for the same reason.

Befco has a towed model with a plastic hopper as well as a plastic hopper for a three point hith spin caster spreader as an option whre the plastic hopper for any of the Vicon spreaders is standard equipment.

You can buy a product called "Salt Away" to aid in washing salt out of a hopper and its mechanism but you will eventually have a rusty spinner and control mechanism if warm water and "Dawn" dish soap are not used to clean it as well.

It all depends on your pocket book as the "Vicon" can be used the year round for precision seeding and spreading bulk lime, lawn lime pellets, gypsum, and powdered herbicides and pesticides.

The construction of the "Vicon" brand of pendulum spreader is very simple and very robust and easily maintained by the end user and cleaning is a breeze with soap and water as there is no where for the salt or powder herbicide or pesticide to collect and eventually corrode the base of the spreader and the cam agitator and pendulum tube whre the material is directed after it is agitated and passed through the metering opening.

The "Vicon" pendulum spreader is able to control both the volume of material delivered and the spreading width of the material with no waste or over spreading of the material and it can be adjusted to spread left or right only to avoid over spreading any material.

Herd makes sanders, they are now Kasco so they may not make them anymore. I was looking at the 750s (if I remember correctly). You really want to use sand over salt unless your goal is to melt the ice off a paved driveway. Sand is much cheaper. I was planning on getter one this year but never got around to it. Last year I would walk down the steep parts with a bucket (1 to 2 gallon size) and just spread sand by swinging the bucket back and forth adjusting the angle to control how much comes out.

I get sand by the dump truck load, I think the last time I bought it I paid $4 a ton. The top tends to freeze though so I keep it covered and I break the top off with either the BH or the fel then put the frozen chunks back to keep the soft dirt from freezing. Around here you can just take a drive over to the town highway dept and fill a few 5 gallon buckets.

Leonz can the Vicom spreader hand wet sand?

Hello Al,

Yes, the Vicon can be used for wet sand and
lime dust as well.

The discharge opening can simply be opened
further with no issues as the throat is fully
exposed and the cam shaft agitator is in the
base above the discharge.

The discharge swing adjustment which controls the
spreading width can be adjusted to narrow the
width of delivery if desired for the wet sand as well.
