Default Tiller colors: Do matching colors matter?

I believe price, quality, dealer location, brand name, the dealer operation & customer relations, net presence and color all are involved in the decision making process. The question is how much does color play in that process? Do compact tractor owners of JD, Boomer, kubota, Kioti, MF and others want matching color implements? If so what implements. Just rotary tillers and finish mowers? What about fertilizer spreaders and rotary cutters? Yes it matters but how much does matter? Do Deer customers care less about color matching than Kubota customers? If the customers do not make their wants known it is hard to meet their needs.

I believe that, given a choice, most people would select an attachment, any attachment, whose color matched their tractor. I don't believe that many people would pay much of a premium for this, perhaps $20?

I think you've got "color" listed correctly in relative importance to all the others. Let me quantify it for my personal opinion:

Given two identical attachments,
If the attachment was going to cost $200, I would not pay more than $10 more to get one that matches my tractor's color. - and then only if it wold not mean I had to wait (i.e. needs to be in stock).
If the attachment was going to cost $1,000, I might pay up to $50 more to get a matching color - but not if it would mean I had to wait.

Then again, the desision is highly dependent on what else I might could spend the $50 on at the time. So it may not be a decision on how much color is worth but rather on whether color is worth more than that new (tool, etc.) that would cost the same.

If the attachment does the job you need done the way you want to do it ... what does color have to do with it as long as it is an acceptable equipment color (no pinks)... why do you care?

I'd have some problems colour matching as a lot goes from rust to shinny steel in a matter of hours.

Mark, I think that there are probably three sets of customers relative to color being important:

1) Folks who really don't care and see no value at all for this attribute. They want the product for what it does, rather than for cosmetic appearance

2) Folks who would enjoy a matching color, but will not pay more than a minimal premium for it as functionality, again, is the prime reason for their purchase

3) Folks who are very anal about color matching and will go out of their way to have a specific appearance to their implements, even to the extent to choose a more expensive option or wait for delivery

I personally fit into the second catagory. I happen to be a pretty anal person when it comes to these things, but also recognize and place limits on what I'm willing to pay or endure to satisfy my inclinations. I'd pay a few dollars more, but not a lot. I'd wait a short time, but not a lot. And, of course, they do make paint in a variety of colors...<G>

Some equipment manufacturers recognize the marketing value of color choice; Midwest, for example. And dealers of a particular brand of tractor would probably stock a given implement in a matching color if it is available...there is that "made for my tractor" showroom appeal. But even dealers would need to weigh any cost/availability factors in that decision, as I suspect you are doing based on your original post.

Does a matching implement look cool? Yes!

Would I pay more or wait for it, No!

My wife might have a different opinion, And I quote "How come the plow is brown?" I told her because the blue one (New Holland) cost more! That settled it for her.

I would have to say that color would be my last consideration-- although, when I build a 3pt winch for a customer, I ask what it is going on, for color of course.

I haven't seen many attachments in the least clashing and conflicting color: black. It seems to work well for women (i.e., the old standby, the LBD - (little black dress) ). Just make sure it is good paint so I can protect my toy investment from rust. But I guess you could also make them rust colored!

I'd buy black, even though I am a category 3 person!

I'm with jbecker - all things being equal, I'll pick the matching color. If not, forgetaboutit.
All the dealers I visited had most of their implements the color of the brand they sell new - very homogenous. I guess this is why the various implement makers offer colors to the dealers.
