Good Morning,
I need advice as to what mower and tiller to buy and a fair price to pull behind a JD 3320 with Hydrostat.

The dealer mentioned the MX5 mower and JD 655 or JD 665 Tiller. I will be mowing land where I cut 2-4" saplings almost to the ground level. I will be tilling a 2-3 acre root-free (sorta) area and would like to till down about 7-10".

Any suggestions on what you have experienced as to the correct mower/tiller and price would help. I know area determines price at times, and just wanted to see what you have experienced.

Still getting the hang of the FEL and BH, but vastly delayed due to snow and then mud.

Best to you,
Jim

We sell Tarter Geardrive roto tillers, Hawkline Roto tillers, Phoenix Roto tillers and First Choice Roto tillers. The Best deal currently on a 5 ft heavy Duty Geardrive tiller would be the Hawkline at $1595. This tiller has 6 tines per rotor and slip clutch PTO. They are coming from Huntington Tn. The 5 Ft Hawkline Rotary Cutter is $895 with slip clutch PTO. Shipping is very reasonable. Ken Sweet

Tilling down 7"-10" you're gonna need a plow. Moldboard or chisel. Hire a local farmer to bust that sod, then go at it with a tiller. But 2-3 acres is a lot to tackle with less that 40-50 HP. A couple of years ago I rented a 35 HP JD and a 72" tiller. Took half a day and three passes to bust virgin sod on a half acre garden patch. (you need to run slooow with a tiller.)

Good advice especially a local farmer.

A good farm family rents 22 acres from us, so I will ask them if they will break the ground and then I can till it.

I would not mind half a day as I am own and work the land to give me peace form the office work. Four heart attacks (eight stents), the land just calms me down even as it makes me "good" tired.

Thanks again.

MX5 is a good heavy cutter. Look into a reverse tine tiller. Does a more aggressive job. Look at Land Pride RTR series tillers.

One of the best Reverse Rotation Tiller out there is the Phoenix T10R-58GE. 58 inch working width and geardrive and series 5 slip clutch driveline. $2750. Ken Sweet

MX5 and 665 are the best out there. The MX5 has a double wall casing as well as a stump jumper. The 665 is commercial rated with a heavy tailgate. You bought the Green for a reason- you should get the quality attachments to match it.
As long as you keep sharp blades on them they will out perform everything else. Figure on spending $500 every 4-5 years on tines for the 665 and around $200 for MX5 blades every 6-7 years depending on use.

Thank you..good advice. Actually all were good as each gave me information I had not thought of and caused me to search and watch videos.

I now feel comfortable in talking to the dealer.

We own a MX 7 on the farm and it has a China made gearbox. Be sure to ask about the MX 5 when you talk to the dealer. Ken Sweet
