So, what is the benefit of this over having a single rake on the 3ph drawbar (so that the nose of the rake can be lifted at the end of the row)?

On the pro side, Dollys allow for tighter ends on the windrows, Keeps the rake away from the rear tractor tire on tight turns, easy to park by hand when storing inside. The biggest Pro is allowing farmers with disabilities to continue raking hay because of the easy hookup. One of the best things about the dolly rakes is you can pull them with anything, I even seen them pulled with a quad. They are better on uneven ground. In the long run a dolly rake is a must when you are doing most of the work by yourself. Con side is that they cost $375. As a side note: Never rake legume hay with any rake when it is dry. You will knock off leaves. Ken Sweet

Like Ken said the biggest pro is the hook up, back up drop a pin connect the hydo line and off you go.

Is there a dolly that you can just basically use to extend the tractor drawbar so to speak so you don't have to modify the rake? I have a 256 and am considering a dolly if I don't upgrade to a larger rotary rake because of my fields being odd shaped and with difficult turns. I am not sure how well the dolly would work though for my fields.

Robert, I don't know of anything commercially available that would kick that rake back far enough to do any good. You probably could fab up something. Your field raking conditions are probably not comparable to what we have here in the Mammoth Cave karst region of Ky. Most all fields are odd shaped and have sinks in most of them. Not to mention very rolling. Dolly rakes make raking hay fun again. Ken Sweet

I have considered fabbing up a simple unit but so far I have just adjusted how I rake and take wider turns while raking and just make due. If I go with a large rotary rake then its a moot issue as it will rake plenty wide enough that I won't have to make tight turns like I do with the 256. I just don't like the price tag with the double rotor rakes:confused2:
