Back Up Alarm

I bought a VW Caddy van/car (I don't know if they are available in the States). It cuts out the radio when reverse is selected and beeps once - annoying if you're listening to something but it does make you that little bit more alert to what you're doing. It's also got a proximity alarm that beeps if you start getting too close to anything as you reverse. All-in-all nice features. Maybe a single beep for the tractor would be enough?

back up alarms are soooo annoying. i cant imagine installing one on a tractor unless it spent its entire life near people that cant look out for it. i always look behind me before i back up, and dont need a constant, annoying alarm. backup alarms belong on mining equipment and the like, not tractors.

Sounds like me! My backup alarm is 2 good eyes and paying attention to what I'm doing!

I just ordered one for mine - I know my wife is not from an industrial environment and might someday think 'that stick' was in my way when I chose to back into her...

I also find that when I wear the seat belt I cannot twist to look - I have to unhook it, get some slack, re-hook it, hold the slack (I'm still different sizes, not round!) and then look - it doesn't have the grip/no grip comfort system like a car does (BX23).

Anyway, I have Hydro pedal, no back-up lights... how are folks wiring them? (I understand the electrical part, but inquire about the actuation.) I'm thinking a reverse only oil pressure switch (if such tap exists) would be best, but might be expensive; and that an arm operated switch off the hydro pedal would be adequate. Anyone done either?

if your set up for a back up alarm......there is already a set of relays somewheres that is setting off the alaem.....use the same relay for the lights

i agree. i look wherever i move. have 3 dogs running around. there smart enuf to stay away from the tractor. i have 3 rear facing mirrors also. if i cant visually see where im heading, i dont go there. I know from working on construction sites, you get so tired of hearing that backup alarm you get to the point that you DONT hear it.

its like living next door to a feedlot. Sooner or later your going to say..."what smell" when someone asks you about it.

You cant just rely on an alarm to tell you your all clear behind.

And on top of all that if you have neighbors close by they will get tired of hearing it as well. I cant think of a quicker way to say "I'm the neighbor you read about!" then having your backup alarm beeping all day and annoying the neighborhood!

"if you put the alarm on the kids"

I agree. Anyone who puts his/her trust in a backup alarm on a tractor ESPECIALLY around small kids is asking for trouble. Does anyone really think a small kid ( 5 yrs old or so) will even know what that noise is? And even if you tell them, they'll get so used to hearing it that they'll end up ignoring it. There's no substitute for looking behind you when backing up.

They're ok on jobsites where there's lots of commotion and trucks, etc are sometimes backing up to where workers are standing. This alerts a guy working on a site that a truck that may have been stationary for awhile is now coming at him. In my experience, truck drivers will usually sound their horn as well if they think no one is paying attention.

There's a regulation pending that will require backup cameras on ALL cars sold inthe US in 2013, IIRC. It'll cost consumers $2 billion PER YEAR. Just too much govt in our lives.

Has anyone installed a backup alarm on their tractor. I recently purchased a Kubota M7040SUD and I'd like to install one for saftey.

I don't have one on my tractor but I do have one on my truck that I pull my lawn care trailer with and I like it, wouldn't want to be without it. Parking in neighborhoods with children running around and folks walking their dogs its nice to let the public know what you're doing. I never thot about having one on a tractor but to me it's not a bad idea if you think you need it. If it was an option on my tractor I would have gotten it. Can't be too safe.
