Two-bottom plow always two-bottom?

Some general rules on moldboard plows. They are intended to go half as deep as they are wide. In other words, a 12" plow is only ment to go down 6".

It's not that simple . Many brands have always produced a selection of different boards for different conditions and results , Plenty of 12 in ploughs make a board for 12-14 in deep for potatoes or beet .

Here are the "Farmers" pick for plows for ease of pulling, parts availability, acceptable plowed field and resell value factored in. Best in this order: Ford, Dearborn, Oliver, Massey Ferguson, Ferguson, Pittsburg, International Harvestor, John Deere. Note: The Dearborn and Ferguson have to have the 3 piece setup to qualify for this group. Ken Sweet

Now that's a useful list that found it's way to my wallet. Going to lay eyes on a few plows here and there and then probably give Ken a visit. Heck, not that far from Western NC to KY...short road trip!

Thanks to everyone who chipped in on the topic.

Dave,

I tend to have some extra time on my hands (tell my wife that and I'll hunt you down) , so a few days spent reconditioning my old MF plow was a great project. I don't use it a lot, enough to turn over veg gardens for two or three families. I'm handy with a welder, so repairs aren't a huge challenge.

I think I paid $200 for the one I have, with a little bit of luck it'll outlast me. When you look at the cost over say 20 years, a newer one isn't much more per year. I just like bringing old machinery back to useful service.

Good luck with the hunt!

Speaking of plows:
Ken Sweet, are there any good 4 bottom 16" trip springs left in that country?

Yes, I just left one at a buyout deal that I did not want to mess with. I would put you on to it, however, The Daddy is bedridden for 4 yrs now and his 3 Sons do the dealing and all live out of town. Ken Sweet
