I just bought a Speeco quick hitch. Now my pto shaft for my KK 60" tiller is too short. I tried an 5" extension for the tractor shaft and it helps...but there isnt anyway to secure it...as there is no holes thru the shaft on my JD 2520.I tapped the holes on the 5"extended shaft and put 4 set screws in. This will work for awhile, but soon falls off....no matter how tight I set the screws.I think I just need to buy another half of the KK driveshaft minus the yoke. Any thoughts on this? And where would I find this piece? I'v checked tractor supply and Atwoods.BTW, the driveshaft is triangular shaped

Can the extension be welded in place? Without a pic I'm not sure of what it looks like...

You bought the wrong kind of PTO stub extension. Get one of these instead:
PTO ADAPTER 1-3/8X6SPL M. X 1-3/8X6SPL F - Agri Supply
That button at the end is part of a sliding mechanism that fits into that groove on your tractor PTO output stub

Yep...I got the same extender except I bought mine at Tractor Supply (BTW, I made the same mistake when I bought my first PTO extender...no locking mechanism). I bought mine for a chipper I'd purchased used.
Do NOT weld or permanently attach that extender on your tractor's PTO stub shaft! The drive shaft for your tiller may be too short, but that doesn't mean your other implement drive shafts are too short.

This may be a stupid comment but........

If there is a significant angle up or down where the implement PTO shaft attaches to the tractor, would it be better to purchase a longer shaft? I wonder if having the movement of the universal joint further away from the tractor's PTO would put more strain on the bearings where the PTO comes out of the tractor.

It's just a question....I don't have much experience with such things.

Nothing stupid about it, a rather intelligent question actually. All I can say is that I had Pat's Easy Change system on my last two tractors. and extended the tractor PTO stub with that exact adapter to which I linked above. Six years on one tractor, four years on the other, no problems noted.

For those very reasons you stated, I would want to find or make a longer shaft if it were mine. Baum Hydraulics may have a shaft or at least have the materials for making your own shaft.

The longer shaft would be preferable...less angle on the universal joints.
If you find a PTO drive shaft at a good price (Craigslist, for example), it'd be a worthwhile purchase.
However, like greg_g, I've used a PTO extender for a few years now with no issues. If I ran the implement (as previously posted, a chipper) daily, I would get a new drive shaft for the implement. Actually, reckon I should look for a deal on a drive shaft too...

Check out this web site and see if you can match up the tubing. You should be able to buy both the inner & outer sections of tube.

A thought on the new PTO shaft if you buy a new piece or extension and reuse the universals:

The shafts are triangular so they will only go together one way (the sides of the triangle are all different lengths). That is because it is critical to line the universals up the proper way. I don't know the proper way but remember reading this somewhere. I imagine someone in this forum will know off the top of their head but if not I could probably find the information again. It has to do with how the vertical (with respect to the shaft) parts of the two U joints line up with one another.
