I'm considering buying a dump trailer for use around my property with my L3400, for hauling dirt, etc. The trailer has a pintle hitch. I could pretty easily remove that and weld on a ball hitch-type coupler for cheap, but I'm wondering if there would be a way to use the pintle hitch with the tractor? Any thoughts or ideas on that? If I could weld up some kind of 2" receiver for use on the 3pt hitch, then use a small pintle hook, maybe it would work?

Once you use a pintle, you will wonder why people put up with ball hitch.

I'll 2nd that!

Get or make a hitch for your tractor. Great thing to have if you have trailers.

I personally would use the pintle hitch, a lot less likely to bind up.

That's what I wanted to see! Thanks for the idea, I think I'll keep the pintle on the trailer after all!

If you are handy with a cutter and a welder, go to the junk yard and buy a used reese hitch or two. I bought two for $20 and cut/welded then together to make something prety similar to the pic the Mighty Dodge showed us.

Keep in mind that your 3pt hitch will float up if there is too much weight on the back of the trailer. I take a heavy strap and attach it from my hitch to the drawbar when I move my trailer around just so I can make sure an accident doesn't happen. My trailer is 5k lbs and gets stored on the second floor of my barn so I have to back it up hill to get it there. I sure don't want the hitch coming up and causing an accident.

I see you are from IN also, what part? I live north of Rushville.

May be just me but I hate the slop in a pintle hitch. We use them at work so I have a lot of experience with them.
They are generally easier to hook up but like I said, I hate the slop. Give me a good tight ball anytime.

I never considered the 3pt hitch rising on a heavy load, and I know it will so I'll probably have to strap it down like you do. Nice barn by the way, you don't see many of those around here that aren't caving in or seriously neglected. I live outside of Cambridge City not far from Richmond. I know there's some slop in a pintle hitch but I can probably live with it.
