I just removed my snowblower - except for the pto shaft on the tractor side. It has a ring type coupler similar to a quick disconnect hydraulic connector.

I am able to push the ring in (towards the tractor) until I feel it bottom but when I try to pull the shaft apart from the tractor it won't release. . .
This is the only pto shaft I have with this type of locking arrangement and I remember when I put it on the 1st time in December it took me a minute to figure it out.

Ok what am I missing / what I I've forgotten already?

Try putting some penetrating lube on it, let is set for a few minutes and then push the shaft towards the pto, then pull the ring back. It is probably slightly corroded. Then put some grease on it and the pto itself. Work it on and off a few times. Hope this helps.

I think you have to rotate it, after pushing the ring in. If that doesn't work, pull the ring away from the tractor and rotate (which is what mine requires).

There is a ball bearing that the spring loaded collar holds in place. Try pulling the collar toward the front of the tractor and at the same time pull on the drive shaft. When you get it off you'll see a groove around the PTO shaft that the ball goes into that locks the shaft in place.

It all requires a complicated combination of wrestling, dance and gymnastics based on the "Twister" game. Don't attempt it without help. Grab a beer and lawn-chair, find a limber teenager and call the shots whilst in the relative safety of your outdoor recliner. Make sure to put on some music or wear earplugs to mask the screaming. Once he's managed to extract the offending attachment, give him $20.00 to pay for medical expenses and pat yourself on the back for a job well done.

The PTO shaft I use for my brush hog has a black ring like that to free it from the PTO but you need to pull it away from the tractor to disengage it, not push it towards the tractor. The other side has the standard button to press.

lol - what a fun job, my back hurts now!

Thanks for all the suggestions. Its off now :)

I had my wifey give me a hand. She held the shaft straight out and when I was ready she pulled hard and it came right off

Seriously, all I did was spray it thoroughly with penetrating oil (even tho it was pretty greasy) and push the ring in as far as it would go while at the same time grasping the end of the main body of the coupler & pulling while my wife pulled on the plastic shield of the shaft staright back.

Seems like a lot of work - the button releases are a whole lot easier!
