Land Pride rotary cutter chain shields

Do any of you have Land Pride RC's with the dangling chain shields in the front?

My 1860 came with the steel shield in the back, but nothing mounted on the front side.

From what I can see in the parts manual, they're simply short lengths of chain mounted with a piece of slotted flat bar and a keeper bar on the back side.

I'm thinking of building a set for mine, if it's like anything else Land Pride sells the factory kit would be pricey.

I have them on my RCR2672, in this picture I had not put the rear ones on yet, but now them as well.

How much purpose do they serve, do you think? I'm hoping to reduce the amount of stuff flying out from under the mower, without bending down the grass and such going in.

I really like them and they are far superior to the rubber shields I have had. They don't clog up and I have not seen any chunks, rocks etc. come flying out like I do on our Woods without chains. They do not mash the grass weeds down. Here is a picture of it with the front and rear guards in place and on my tractor.

I just bought a set of chains for a LandPride RCR2596.

Fronts: $175
Rear: $105

On an old BushHog brand 6' mower that had rubber guards I made a set of chains with angle iron and cut chain. Just welded the cut link to the angle iron and that was it.

Lots of galvanized 7/16", 6" chunks of chain and the length (and costs) added up quickly. Then I discovered that the center front chains would be dragged backward into the blade in heavy grass. Duh - should have thought of that first. Cutting off a few links for clearance was the solution.

For the new LandPride it was decided to go ahead with the factory set-up. By the time the angle iron and chain would be purchased it would not have been that much difference (although $300 will buy a lot of chain).

LandPride wanted me to sign a liability waiver if the RC was purchased without guards.

I welded the end link of each length of chain to the flat bar, then bolted each section of flat bar to the front of the cutter. I know there's lots of clearance at the corners, I'll check the center again.

I'm surprised mine came without any sort of guard at the front, the dealer didn't mention it when I was buying. I'd sooner have it open at the back actually, if I had to choose one or the other.

If the chain works out well, I may bend up a piece of steel and make some more for the back to replace the steel guard that's there now. It's not so good when you want to back over something instead of driving ahead.

When I bought my RCR2672, I was asked if I wanted chain or rubber on mine and I specified chain for the front and rubber for the rear. When it was delivered I didn't really notice the rubber had been left off in the rear until I noticed sticks and such being thrown out the back. I called my dealer and he sent someone out to install the full chain in the back free of charge for their oversight, now that's customer service.

I was very uncomfortable with an open back.

I've got them built and installed, now to wait for enough grass to grow to try it out.

Looks like that will work fine.

It has already been mentioned, but make sure those front center chains will miss the blade when extended back. (You likely checked while building them.)
