One of the previous owners of my property was a lobster fisherman and he left the remains of his equipment scattered around the property. I had been looking at these old traps sitting in a boggy section for a while and I kept saying that I would drag them out of there some day. Well now a beaver has moved in and gone to work turning the bog into a pond, so I thought I had better get them before it became too deep for my boots.

As I was dragging the first one out I noticed some metal hiding behind a bunch of dead reeds and stuff. Took a picture so you guys could see how well hidden it was. This is actually the only time of year I would have seen it at all, because soon it will be covered in green growth, and in the winter it would have been covered in snow.

So anyway, I clear away some of the reeds and stuff, and even though I can see it better I still have no idea what it was for. Anyone recognise this?

Sure looks like a great conversation piece. Other than that I have no idea,

More pictures when you get it out. Please.

Would've been better to remove the brush before taking the pic, but it looks like a gang saw. For cutting boords into multiple strips in one pass, like the lathes the traps are made of or possibly wood boat planks. Can you get a clear pic of the other side? MikeD74T

I had no idea, but that seems like a VERY plausible answer. Good thinking Mike:thumbsup:

But they look like steel discs, not saw blades with teeth (to me). ;)

But maybe a machine to make the lobster pots? The wheels look like they would be belt driven.

Could it have had anything to do with crimping rye or hemp stalks for the making of cloth or rope?

A scructhing machine of which there are many different versions.

Or a grape crusher?:D

Look through the brush at the back side. Looks like 2 saw blades. I think the disks are on the outfeed side. Like I said, pics would be better without the brush. MikeD74T

Some good guesses guys. I don't know that I will be wading around clearing off any more brush. More likely the next step will be to get it out, or leave it there.

I would prefer to hook onto it with the loader and lift it out so there is less chance of damaging it, but the ground is pretty boggy so I am not sure if I want to drive that far in. If not I will have to give it a try dragging it out. Even that I am not sure of though, because it is hard to tell how big it is and how much heavy iron is buried in the mud and bog on the far side of it.

If I get a chance to get it out today I will post more pics, if not then it will be a good guessing game for a couple of weeks I guess. :D
