two john deere Sabres (2554-Scotts) and 4410 john deere ,Allis Chalmers WD , 5' Cub Cadet Zero turn
The ash tree bore bugs killed eight 18" to 24" trees by the road and at least two dozen on the five acres that I cut. I payed to have the trees by the road cut and cut most of the others except for the few remaining that may take down the power/tv/phone lines. With all the stumps I must rent a stump grinder from the rental store. Some may rent an attachment for the 3-point on my 4410 John Deere. Has anyone had a luck grinding up stumps with the use of their tractor? To pay a man to come out and chew up all the stumps is too much, charge by the inch. How do you get rid of stumps.

Sorry to hear about your trees...

If you can burn, you can drill several holes in the stump and pour diesel in them, then burn the stump down to below grade.

If you have access to a backhoe you can dig / pull them out.

I've got a Woods stump grinder on my tractor.....and have ground out over 200 stumps with it - all PINE - which is lots different than hardwoods. My pine stumps of your size only take a few minutes. But a hardwood stump (if cut close to the ground) may take me a half hour or so - depending on how fussy a person is.

I have rented grinders and done over 800 stumps with those machines. YOu can do a search here for "stump" "grinder" "Vermeer" "Rayco" "Woods" and get lots of good reads on stump grinding.

With my older pine stumps....I can do about 200 per day. But they dont have lots of exposed roots and grind waay easier than hardwoods.

FWIW.....I would NOT rent a grinder for your tractor if your just going to have a one-time use. Too much hydraulics to plumb up to fit your tractor IMO.

The Rayco and Vermeer 25 HP grinders I rented were about $150 per day (plus gas) and were the self propelled type. (DO NOT get the hand held models - they WILL beat the tar outta you for that many stumps) Make sure they have good teeth when you rent it. I rented some good / some bad. BIG difference and why I bought my own. (at least I know what I got)

I would think you could do all your stumps in a day.

I have had pretty good luck drilling 1" holes as deep as possible and pouring a bit of diesel once a day for a week into them so it soaks in. A bag of charcoal on top will keep it burning a good while.

Have you considered using something like Tannerite for removing the stumps? It'd be pretty entertaining, I bet :D

Too many houses and windows 400-600' away for explosives.

Tried twice to burn one 10" stump up approx. 10" it went out. Had 8-3/4" holes about 3" and let the diesel soak about 10 min. The bark on one side burned some then went out.

I rented a 25 hp Vermeer stump grinder to get rid of about 15 ash tree stumps, It worked great. my stumps were about the same size as yours but the trees were cut down and the stumps were sitting about 2 years. Take a chainsaw and cut the stumps as low as possible so you have less stump to grind. You will be surprised how fast the stump disapears.
