I agree with Zebrafive, if I have to do that with my MX6 at some point I will paint it Bushhog red and send a picture to my deere dealer and corporate showing them the fix.

hello all, my mx6 just failed the same way and was made in spain. I am interested in if Ken or any others have been able to get the bush hog gear box and stump jumper to work on the mx6? luckily I have a backup mower, although it is only 5', but I would like to get this mx6 back in working order for as cheap as possible. I guess I consider myself lucky to have had the mower for almost 10 years cause i would be pissed if it would only be 3-4 years.

diat 150 Welcome to the group and will try to answer your questions.
surplus center in my 2011 edition had a gear box.B&P item 13-1486 Bush hog (@299.99)
    the input shaft 1 3/4 20 Tooth 3: length.
    Output shaft 1.35"dai. 18 T spline w/tapered root 3.4 length
The same item# 13-1486 (@199.99) has a input shaft of 13/4 input20 tooth BUT the out put is 2.35 18 tooth spline.

When I received and installed the gear box talked to local bush hog dealer and told him the size of stump jumper and blade bar needed and paid the amount 447.95 and when item came in the bar center hole was a to small. Now the problems.
Shipping one way for me from surpluss center by truck amounted to $160 and was o'k if had got the smaller out put shaft to exchange it the shipping cost was on be and not worth and 320 bucks itwould require . Talking to Bush hog local 100 mile trip not figured in they had a 260 used but looked good working condition . and so traded in all the ordered pan bolts knives and some additional cash purchased a 260 bush hog used but in good condition connected to my jd 4520 and bush hogged the 30 acres with out a problem.
The jd gearbox shaft I took the shaft to a local machinist and he said the type of metal it was not worth trying to weld and machine to proper size.
Jd wants a health fee for the shaft so my MX6 is tossed into my accumalated junk pile for the time can locate the replacement.

All this said good idea but the total cost begins to add up to either purchase another jd gear box and cut clover and panseys or buy another rotary cutter from local dealer .

It is a sad day when a reputation for good farm equipment is exchanged for profits.

so you ended up not being able to get the bush hog stuff to work on the mx6 it sounds like because the output shaft on the available surplus gearbox is now too big?

I just hate to see the mx6 body go to waste. its in great shape. luckily I have a heavy duty alamo industrial shredder as a backup, but it is 5 foot instead of 6. I might try and get someone to reweld or build me another shaft, but I dont want to spend more than a few hundred. I guess Ill keep my eyes open for another on craigslist..... but I can guarantee it wont be another John Deere.

Would be interested in what pieces, prices and modifications are suggested for this repair. I have one of these and like it but am a little concerned over the common shaft failures on the MX6 like I have.

    deere5105,
Know how you feel as I have an MX6 too, while it is still okay I have given all of this some thought. While I am not happy about it I finally concluded that if mine does break it is cheaper to fix it for $1500 than to buy another complete unit. As I understand it you have to change the gearbox and shaft for the new model.

I have pondered this decision for some time, but am happy with the performance of the cutter and can't really justify spending equal repair dollars just to sale and buy another on a "possible" failure. However, I would be interested in learning of all possible repair options "if" this does occur. Recently had an issue where I bent the drive shaft between the front and rear end and managed to get it repaired/replaced locally for hundreds less than a new one through JD.

I HAVE A MX 6 BUSH HOG , I SNAP THE PINION SHAFT ABOUT 3 YEARS BACK , REPLACE GEARBOX , SAME THING LAST WEEK , TALK WITH JOHN deere DEALER THEIR ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM IS TO UP GRADE TO NEW TYPE THAT HAS A NUT ON STUMP JUMPER PAN , I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM WITH OLD TYPE IS THAT THE BOLT ON THE STUMP JUMPER PAN WORK LOOSE AND THE BECOME LOOSE ON THE SHAFT AND THE MOTION SNAP THE SHAFT.
HOW TO FIX IS TO MAKE SURE THE BOLT IS TIGHT AND WELD A PIECE KEY STOCK ACROSS STUMP JUMPER BOLT AND PAN.
JOHN DEERE SAID CANNOT GET THE SHAFT ANY MORE, SO THE UPGRADE IS $1629.00 FOR GEARBOX,PLUS $700.00 FOR BLADE AND STUMP JUMPER PAN.
I NEED THE DOWN SHAFT IF ANYONE HAS ONE
