Just bought a mower from a dealer, and it has some very small chains clipped to the propshaft housing. What are they for????

I guessed that they are to hold the plastic guard in place (keep it from spinning) while the drive shaft rotates. But that is a guess, and I also use mine to hold the shaft up off the floor when the implement is not on the tractor.

I think you are talking about the shaft guard, the chains clip to the implement and the tractor to keep the guard from spinning. The shaft spins in the guard.

I've been through plenty of PTO shafts over the years, and ignorantly started out using the chains to stop the PVC cover from spinning. Didn't take long before the little PVC connection point gave up the ghost. Chain dangling, cover spinning. Just another example of incompetence at OSHA.

So the only thing I use the chains for now is to keep the shaft up outa the dirt when the implement is parked. The housings still spin, but I just don't let anybody near them that could get hurt.
