Hi, can you post a picture of the right hand side of this. I might have a new project to work on. :D

It does have a shear bolt at the top of the auger. Hopefully it never breaks. :D

Unless you have no rocks, which you might looking at your location, you will break many shear bolts, sometime more than one per hole. They are not hard to replace, just a bit of a pain having to do it every hole or two.

Have not really run into any rocks during building the house, barn, chicken coop etc. Do have clay in some areas, some spots only a few inches under dirt. Biggest problem, which I haven't had yet, is getting stuck in tree roots. I am going to be drilling more holes soon so will pickup a few extra shear bolts.

That must be nice not having rocks. I don't know how tree roots affect it, prolly depends on how big they are. The worst that can happen is you have $5 worth of shear bolts that sit in your tractors tool box and never get used :)

As the auger only rotates one way the auger could get caught up between/in roots and you can't lift it out of the hole. Then you have to manually   back it out.

Over a year ago I bought this old home made post hole auger from a lady who had gotten it with the house that used to owned by a landscaper. I knew him slightly and talked to him about the auger. Said he had used it to drill several thousand holes. I have used it a couple of times. Yesterday was the day to make the wife happy and put up a fence and gate to keep our 75 egg laying chickens from digging up the front flower beds and pooping all over the porch, sidewalk and driveway area. Well it sure works great, took only a few minutes to drill the holes. Put the posts in, some gravel, tamping it down as I was filling the holes and then up went the wire. This old auger is made out of a car rear end. Easy to attach, use and was much cheaper than a new one. Now it looks like the next project  the wife has for me is to fence in behind the barn, that should be up to 80 - 100 posts. Glad I don't have to dig them by hand. :D
I know this is an old post, but I have a similar homemade auger and can't figure out how to hook it up. Can you send a picture of how it connects to the top link?
Tks,
John

That's interesting for sure, looks heavy enough not to need down force.

Wonder what's the best gear ratio :D

4.10 clearly, that 3.73 is for the grocery getters

John, post a photo of yours and we call let you know... basically, you remove the top link, the "main" boom attaches directly to where the top link was attach (the back of the tractor).
