Old home made post hole auger, pics.

Over a year ago I bought this old home made post hole auger from a lady who had gotten it with the house that used to owned by a landscaper. I knew him slightly and talked to him about the auger. Said he had used it to drill several thousand holes. I have used it a couple of times. Yesterday was the day to make the wife happy and put up a fence and gate to keep our 75 egg laying chickens from digging up the front flower beds and pooping all over the porch, sidewalk and driveway area. Well it sure works great, took only a few minutes to drill the holes. Put the posts in, some gravel, tamping it down as I was filling the holes and then up went the wire. This old auger is made out of a car rear end. Easy to attach, use and was much cheaper than a new one. Now it looks like the next project the wife has for me is to fence in behind the barn, that should be up to 80 - 100 posts. Glad I don't have to dig them by hand.

I just came in from fencing in our small garden. I bought a PHD last Fall and it saved the day. We used 12 posts and dug the holes about 3 1/2 ft deep. It sure beats doing it by hand.

Looks like cupboard space to me, the more you have the more you fill:laughing:You have a post hole digger now you got to find a reason to own it so you put up fences everywhere One does have to acknowledge the ingenuity derived from need though. Good stuff, if I had one I definitely would find a need for a fence somewhere:thumbsup:.

No idea on what the gear ratio could be. I am guessing this auger could be 30+ years old.
It is fairly heavy, it just goes into the ground as I lower the 3pt arms.
Makes very nice holes. :laughing:

Could probably drill a million holes with that thing as I don't think you have to worry about gear wear etc with only 30-40 pto HP input.

Just make sure there is some type of shear bolt for relief if it locks up in the ground. To protect your tractor.

Turn the Auger one full revolution and count the # of revolutions the pto shaft makes ???:1

It does have a shear bolt at the top of the auger. Hopefully it never breaks.

I've never used a PTO PHD but from what I read on the other PHD threads it's pretty common to break the shear bolts, just have some extras.

What I don't think will break is that monster gear box/differential. So you need that bolt to go first before something in your PTO drive-line.
