Hey, I was mowing a Field with my Fronter 2084 grooming mower - grass was about 6in high...when done moved to some very tall dense grass 24-36in high and before too long saw that the mowing deck was smoking!! ...I guess the belts were slipping...I shut down the PTO and it continued to smoke for a few minutes. once cooled i tested it and it worked fine...put it away and got my rotary cutter to finish up. do you think i hurt the grooming mower? anybody else ever do this?

Just guessing, of course, but it sounds to me as if you were right when you assumed it was the belt slipping. And if so, no damage except the belt. And it may still work OK for quite awhile.

Yep - Belts slipping. If the grass gets to be the wrong combination of too high, too thick and/or too wet, I'll use the rotary cutter instead of the finish mower. I try to keep that from happening though, as its too easy to tear up the ground with the rotary cutter. And I've started keeping a couple spare sets of belts for the finish mower.

I also agree that your belt was smoking. I would look at the belt to see if there is any damage. Last time this happened to me, the belt worked OK the next session but broke shortly thereafter. I did not have aspare belt so I was down for a while.

I hate when that happens.

thanks mokelly...i knew i should remove the covers and check the belts but was too lazy...you gave me the motivation. i checked them out when i got home tonight and they looked fine...the mower is new - only used a few times...everything looked new.

Yep, smoked my belts a few times and never seemed to hurt anything though it surely cuts down on how long your belts will last.
