Be mow off the tall grass to get rid of it as it will ball up on the tiller and reduce the effectiveness of the tiller knives making it vibrate much more.

Adding to the already excellent number of suggestions previously given you need to till at right angles as well to eliminate any untilled ridges left with
the original passes.

Lots of good advice already - especially about checking your clutch adjustment.
Here's some more:

Check fluid levels before you use it.

Check that tine nuts & bolts are tight.

First pass can be made shallow, slow & at low PTO speed to reduce energy of impacts. When I till a new patch I troll with the subsoiler to see if there's anything big under the surface that I don't want to find with the tiller - very large rocks, wire, pipe, etc.

Echo what Agrantina said about drawbar/PTO shaft interference - check it!

A couple of posts here state that in rocky ground the back gate should be all the way up. Since mine comes off with just one bolt should I just remove it permanently to save it from rusting and having to repaint it? When might I want to put it back on?

The best thing I ever did for my tiller was buy one of TSC's $120 middlebusters. Let the plow do the breaking work, and use the tiller to pulverize. I have sandy clay soil, and I can run a tiller over it to dig 5" deep cup-shaped cuts in hardpan; a quick pass (or two--I like to do a pair of perpendicular runs) with the middlebuster will dislodge and fracture the soil to a foot or more, and the tiller will turn it to light, fluffy topsoil.

I suppose the advice would be "use it for what it is, not what you want it to be."
