How far can you extend a PTO shaft?

I have always heard 1/3 overlap is safe for PTO shafts.

1/3 of the overall length or 1/3 of the 1/2 length?

And 1/3 seems odd - I have the same torque going through the shaft regardless of length - some shafts (chipper) are more than twice as long as others...

1/3 of the collapsed length. So if the shaft was 24" pushed together-you would not want to extend it more than 40" leaving 8" overlap. Not gospel, just a rule of thumb...

Good post. I'm using a different tractor this year with my PATS EZ hitch mounted.

My cyclone spreader didnt have any too much overlap on the PTO - maybe only 3" in the worst case senario and about 8" when raised to operating height. While this is not tough duty on this cylcone joint.....it still concerns me....and I think I will find an adaptor like that mentioned above (otherwise....sooner or later I'll forget to raise the 3 point before switching "on" the PTO).

I think the amount of overlap depends on the application. If you are using a rotary cutter or PHD that can experience lots of torque and has shearbolts, then longer overlap would be better. However, something like a chipper/shredder that works with a big flywheel or a tiller with a fixed torque slipclutch might work with less overlap. My choice would always be as much overlap as possible. Also, if you buy adapters and hook them together, consider that they may be tight to start out, but after a year's use, they may get loose and woobly. You have to think ahead to when the coupling becomes a little worn with more slop. Just sayin'. . . . :)

What is your skill level/tool stock? And how much do you love the Safety Police?

One cheaper alternative and what I will be doing with mine...Luckily I kinda dodged a bullet, its JUST barely long enough now when hooked up directly to the 3pt, but when I get it swung over to iMatch ready, it will be too short...Anywho...my plan is to just replace the shaft tubing. Not hard to do...drive out roll pin, press out old shaft tubing from each yoke, press in new tubing, and voila for 40 bucks your in business...

NOW...that being said, you wont have a safety shield on it..as your old one is too short.

If I could source the matching shaft, that would be a great solution. And the safety police can be satisfied with some PVC that's close to the right size. I'll check the shield overlap when it's assembled - 3" of shield overlap is fine with me.

Got a good source for raw PTO shaft? The shaft in question is the semi-triangular shape.

Not sure where to get shaft around you but I think calling a couple of dealers would answer your question. My neighbour blew up a borrowed tiller PTO shaft because it was too short (about 2 inches engagement) and I rebuilt it for him with two new yokes and shaft - he bought all the parts for about $100 including the shaft. I just went through this the other day trying to hook up a Rhino mower to my M7040. Ended up buying a drive shaft for a post hole digger. 53' colapsed length. Price was $170.00
