Same here, just scrap laying around the shop. I palletized mine so that I can move the PHD when necessary, without the need to actually mount it on the tractor. The cradle design however, requires that the auger be pulled up parallel with the boom (note chain) before using the hydraulics to lower it into the "parked" position. The second chain is to hold the PTO shaft up outa the dirt after it's disconnected from the tractor.

Here's my phd stand. Everything is resting safely on the ground. I don't like having heavy things suspended in the air. It consists of two old fence posts, a piece of scrap lumber and a piece of rope.

That method means you still have to 1) back your tractor to a precise spot (always a pain IMO), & 2) lift a fairly heavy portion of the PHD & hold it accurately while making the connections (also a pain & a good way to get extra greasy!).

I know you don't want to suspend it in the air, but with the chain & rafter mine is hanging from now, the bottom of the auger is only an inch or 2 above the floor. Nobody could fit underneath it, & it would do very little damage even if it did ever fall. I guess it could fall & then lean over onto somebody, but it isn't likely to do any serious harm.

I wanted one that i can move into and out of the shop easily, so i gathered up some scrap wood and a scrap pallet...and here goes. Cheap and easy...just like me. Hooks up in minutes, and i dont have to lift anything cept the auger.

GRS : Awe come-on,show us the wheels that go with that heavy duty pallet .
Them beautiful Norwegian Fjords must be just iching to pull that too ! :D

BTW :That tack you use on them (Fjords) probably cost more than most humans wardrobe.

that tack is mucho spensive. I have a team working harness and a separate team show/driving harness. I also have 2 sets of single driving harness. Yeiks...i must be nuts.
then again, i pay more for their shoes than i do my own.... and they get a new set every 6 weeks..i go over a year on my own shoes

no wheels on pallet...i use pallet forks

GRS,

What does the Hyd cyclinder do on your PHD? I find it to be a VERY interesting mod...

Also, was the hole you run the bar through already there??

Thanks in advance,
David

Downforce. Not sure about his particular model, but on mine it's a factory option/upgrade - rather than an aftermarket modification. I just opted not to purchase it (yet), as my augering to date has not suggested it would have been worth the money.

The hole the bar is run thru was already there. Its for adjusting the arms and post hole digger.

The hydraulic assist adds about 250-500 pounds of down force while digging holes. This way i dont need someone holding on a steel rod hanging off the PHD to dig the holes.

Its a single acting cyllinder that applies downpressure but immediately deflated when i raise the PHD.

And it works GREAT

This one is actually from the factory that made my PHP (Speeco). The only thing was that i waited for 6 years to buy it, and their design had changed. I had to do some mods to make it work. On the new models it simply bolts right on.

But my mods simply reflected the changes that they made.

Thanks for the details. Mine's a SpeeCo too, ~2 years old. So it's probably got the necessary mounts for the current downforce upgrade. Still haven't convinced myself I need it though.

if yours digs without it...than you dont. I have decomposed granite here and mine wouldnt go into the ground without human help or this thing ...
