Re: 18\" Auger for TSC post hole digger
I'm not sure but I believe that TSC sells the Worksaver brand of post hole diggers. I have a Worksaver model 500 that is considered a standard duty model and is only approved for augers up to 12". Worksaver does make an 18" auger for the heavy duty diggers. Since I was only planning on using an 18" auger for planting small trees where I was only going to dig about 12-15" deep I didn't think the larger auger would hurt my machine so I ordered one from a John Deere dealer who also sells the worksaver line. The output shaft is the same size on both diggers and the holes were a perfect match. I've been using it for 3 years now without a problem. And, as you might expect, I started using the 18" auger for more than just shallow holes. I also bought the 10" extension that Worksaver makes so I can dig almost 48" deep. I'm sure I'm pusing the unit to the limit but so far so good. I'm not recommending this combination because it goes beyond what the manufacturer approves. Finally, I'm probably breaking every rule because I had to go to hardened shear bolts which is frowned upon by most users. But with standard bolts it won't dig with the 18" auger more than a few inches in clay without shearing a bolt. Again, please understand, I don't recommend what I'm doing only saying its possible. Since I use my post hole digger alot with tree planting and post hole digging for the neighbors, friends, etc. I am planning on moving to a heavy duty digger later this Spring.
