My strainer is before the pump instead of after. I'd just as soon not have any debris going through the pump if I can help it.

Thanks for the tips on where to look for hand-me-down barrels/drums/tanks. There's certainly plenty of industry of all kinds going on here in the San Francisco Bay Area -- I guess I need to just start asking around for discards.

Just to show y'all how really dumb I am, I was picturing a larger version of my Solo backpack sprayer and pressurizing it with a small air compressor. Can you imagine the trial and error process of setting up a relief valve just right? /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

RonH - A strainer sounds like an excellent idea no matter how I build this thing. Looking forward to seeing pictures of your setup.

These pictures should give you an idea of how to put a sprayer together.
I purchased this sprayer quite a few years ago. From a lawn equipment dealer that was selling out. It had a no pump. I installed the 6-roller pump, direct drive off the motor. All the fittings are 1". Some of the hoses are smaller. The black item covering the "S" is the strainer. Just in front of it is the pressure regulator. I have never run the system over 150 psi. I would have to put braided hoses on, to run any higher. The orange colored line is the return to tank. The three-shutoff valves are for the three sections of boom. On the bottom below the shutoff valves of each boom line is an elbow. These have a drain valve (similar to the type used on a radiator). This allows for easy cleaning and draining of all lines. To the far right of gage is an elbow. The hose for the spray wand is attached. The only shut off for this is the control for wand sprayer. I have been going to put a shut off valve and a quick disconnect to make it easy to remove. The hose is always in the way when just spraying fertilizer and herbicide with the booms
On the left side of tank, above the motor air cleaner is a sight gage. It has the number of gallons in tank. This makes it easy to mix chemicals.
I use it mostly to weed and feed my lawn. I have sprayed my 10 orchard trees but most of them have died. The rest of the fruit is eaten by Deer. Don't want to be feeding them chemical coated fruit.

In the rear view, the three lines that feed the booms can be seen. The Nozzles are 24" apart. They are the clamp on type. I believe the manufacture is Nelson? The tubing is mounted to 1" square tubing. The booms lay down. With folding booms, the whole sprayer takes only a small space in barn. The inlet and return lines are pipe taped into tank. They are glued into the tank. I don't know what type would be needed to get a good bond to a plastic drum. Maybe one of the Goop products will work. The tank does have a sump. Which can be seen just to the right of boom feeder lines? With a drum, you may not have this but if drum is tilted toward the suction line, there should not be a problem.
