Do any of you use weights on the front of your tractors.
I maintain 1 mile of gravel road----all uphill ( lessin ya goin down LOL).

When pulling gravel up hill I think I need more traction from the front wheels. Also---The other day the front reared up---wheels off the ground---YIKES.
I see that tractor weights are very expensive from Kubota & they tell me I need a special bracket to mount weights.

How bout home made ones????

When I bought my 2320 JD, I worked 5 (210#) of weights into the deal. I bought a 60" RFM and didn't want the loader on for mowing so I knew that front weight were going to be a necessity. In all honesty i still need 2 more and the bracket that goes with them. with th mower raised and 3 weights on the frontend I can lift the frontend of the tractor off the ground by hand and with 5 it is a little light in some circumstances.

i cast some concrete weights and hung them on the front of my ford 4600 I mow with as I have to trailer up a steep incline and with a hd 6' mower on the back it was getting a lil soft in the front.

I have a Jinma 284 with both a FEL and suitcase weights on the front. I have 4 weights and I think they are 35# each or so. They really seem to help it steer in the snow.

My tractor is a little bigger than yours, about 5500# with me on it and something on the 3 point, but I am sure it will help yours also.

In my opinion your issue is no FEL. These tractors are made to have loaders and the balance is all off if not equipped with one.

I have both front and rear weights on my oliver, i have the heavy grill which is 300pounds, the weight hanger which is at least another 100 and two 150+pound plates. Also i have the loader on as well, and some times when i am mowing i still dont have enough front.

When i am using it as a loader tractor, i have a full set of wheel weights that never come off and i still see my rear wheels coming off of the ground. I had to put a bale on the back.

I can run more weight in the front but it blocks the grill and causes and over heat. I would make a bracket that goes on the front and have a steel box made out of 3/8 plate and fill it with lead. Any one have a weight of concrete vs lead on a ci basis?

On my yanmar ym2000 (similar in size to a JD 850) I have almost 200lbs on the front. I had a solid 3" round stock steel piece welded to some angle iron to make a bracket to hold it on. Its around 40" wide. That wasent enough so i cut about a 30" or so hollow 3" ID steel pipe and had it filled with lead then welded to the same brackets. This new addition was tipping the scales at ~100lbs. That with the old piece which was around 75lbs is just about the right weight although id like another 50. With my disk harrow and a few hundred pounds on it its still light in front.

All of my tractors except the Duetz have come with weights on the front. I removed them from the Steiner (actually rear weights) and my JD2555, but still have them on the Ford 7710 to offset the weight of the boom mower. I think there are 13 weights plus the heavy mounting bar and it still isn't enough. Only takes extending the boom rearward to send the front end skyward.

Well I did some lookin----

The density of lead is abt 11340kg/m3...
and of concrete is abt 2400 kg/m3
for a fixed volume and shape...i guess lead is at least 4 times heavier...


The main problem with concrete is that is is so much less dense than lead or cast iron.
This means that to have the same weight you will need approximately 5.5 time more volume of concrete than lead.

The usual method for increasing the weight of the concrete keel is to add scrap iron into the mix.

But even with scrap you will still need somewhere in the region of two to three times the volume of a lead keel.

I think the correct way to add weights to a tractor is simply add a piece of railroad track to the front, in whatever lenght you can find or purchase (don't steal them, it makes too big a mess when the train finds the missing section). For larger tractors, stacking tracks a couple high seems to work, or putting them in front of each other. I prefer the bottom to bottom bolted together method.

As stated above, lots of ag tractors carry cast iron weights on the front for ballast. Just a few years ago many of the farmers would put large Rock Boxes on the front of the tractors in oder to pick up the occasional rock out in the field.....but many put the rock boxes on as an afforadable way to add front ballast to the tractor too. Rocks and gravel are inexpensive mass. :thumbsup:

Maybe your tractor could be fitted with a front rock box?
