Anybody have experience with the York Basic line of rakes? Local dealer carries them and wants 620.00 for 5' model. Compared to 429.99 for 5' CountyLine at TSC. I looked at the York one and since I really don't know what I'm looking at I figured I'd ask here.

Thanks

Rob

Countyline is a cheap line usually sold at TS, York has the name recognition and quality, at resale time the York will bring a little more. If you don't plan on selling it and don't use it like a scraper box I would say get the Countyline but wait for the 10% coupon they usually run the first week in August.

This past spring I bought a 5 foot County Line rake from TSC and it has worked great. I looked at some other brands that were more expensive and I liked the CL rake better. The frame looked stronger and I liked the way the tines were attached. My rake has seen some hard use including getting snagged on large rocks and tree roots, so far nothing has broken.

Disclaimer: I don't have a rake, but I've been "shopping" for one for about 3 years.

It seems from what I've seen that how the tines are supported is where the rakes differ most. This affects their ability to take twisting loads without actually twisting or bending. You want all the tines to contact a flat, level surface at the same time to get a good finish. If possible, I'd like to get one with a closed section - a box section would be ideal. If that's not an option, then next I'd look for a heavy walled channel section. I suppose a very heavy wall L section could work, too. It seems like the twisting, bending problem occurs when you hook an outside tine on a root or similar, fixed object without knowing it and continue to move.

What you can't tell by just looking at them is the quality of steel and how that steel has been heat treated, which can make a huge difference in how it performs - I think that's where the premium brand should give you some peace of mind.

Thank you for all the reply's. I just got back from JD dealer they have Frontier. They only had 6 footers and felt that is what I should buy for use behind my 4110. They are 695.00.
Now just have more questions 5' or 6' , CountyLine, York, Frontier!!

Doesn't make buying implements any easier then buying the tractor :)

While I do love my Frontier Snowblower, in this case I would say....Go for the CountyLine.

I have used my CL rake a lot and I have had no problems. I use mine in a residential sort of way and I most often use it going slow.

Save a couple hundred bucks and get the same results.;)

If things are tight in the vicinity that you will be rakeing, get the 5'.

If the area is wide open, get the 6'. You're tractor can handle it.
