So I'm trying to find a left over M5040HD, but having little succes. I found a barely (150 hours) used one with a cab.

She has to come with a mower this time, so . . .

LandPride 72 Flail @ $5k (can finance with tractor-not the used one:ashamed:- with Kubota Credit), or

BushHog 7' rotary mower @ $3k

Uses:

Sides of 1/2 M private Rd
Trails around property
Mulching crop residue prior to tilling

WWUD?

First off, I'd get another brand of tractor.....;)

(I can't resist either!)

Either mower can PROBABLY do everything you expect. The rotary mower is more flexible in what it can do and offers you more options as to what ELSE it can do. Flails DO NOT like heavy woody plants material....where a rotary excels.

And then there's higher routine maintenance cost IN ADDITION to initial purchase price with the flails. Do you really need a much more expensive more to do the same job?

Edit:

It is more of an issue of the quality of cut and how you want it to look where the Land Pride FM21 model

EDIT: (I should have stated the Land Pride adjusts to the lower cutting height of 3/4 of an inch for the end user)

The shovel type slicers will give you a bit of a waffle pattern of mowing the grass/brush and still look very nice.

If you have the time to shop come to the Empire Farm Days with your checkbook and letter of credit from your bank.

The show runs from today through thursday at 4 P.M.,there is a lot of Kubota Iron on the site.

There is also an auction on the site the friday following the Empire Farm Days.

The new Kubota tractor and the Landpride flailmower allows you a new
equipment warranty and a new warranty for the flail mower which is a better
option "simply from the economics of purchasing an extended warranty" for the tractor/prime mover.

You can always refinance if possible with the Kubota credit terms or go somewhere else as zero percent is not zero percent in all truth, its Kubota USA simply marketing their product and you are paying to finance it through them with out an "interest charge".

You can always pick up a used very wide crop flail shredder through Used Tractors For Sale at TractorHouse.com: John Deere Tractors, used farm tractors and farm equipment, tractors for sale, Case IH, New Holland, Agco, Kubota if you want to do it that way. Parts for flail shredders are available so thats not an issue in any case.

No one in their right frame of mind would want to "peel down to 3/4" " on any turf grass they want to survive. That's probably a faster way to kill off your turf than a full rate application of RoundUp, not to mention exposing the turf to propagation of weeds, disease, and effects of drought and heat. (by destroying/eliminating crop canopy, exposing soil to direct sunlight) Most common cool season AND warm season turf grasses do best when maintained at a height of 3" or more. (at a minimum) It takes a specialized grass (such as bent grass....golf course greens.....) to be maintained at closer cut. And with that comes a constant and expensive maintenance regimen . (ie daily watering in warm weather, near constant monitoring for insect problems, ect...)

I see where the previous post has been edited to eliminate ONE OF MANY errors...Primarily the serious mistake of suggesting "peeling down to 3/4""......

Why dont you just look at the Land Pride web site and it "states" that thier FM21 flail Mower can be adjusted DOWN too 3/4 of an inch of cut so Landpride is the one in error??? Perhaps you should discuss it with them?

I already know they can be lowered to 3/4"....That WASN'T your error. (YOUR error...) That was suggesting in any manner that it was a good practice to scalp grass that short. (before that mistake was pointed out and you edited out that statement) We ARE addressing the OP's questions regarding his potential uses...or SHOULD be......At least I am anyway. It's somewhat unknown as to what direction you're taking the post.....It sure isn't one of making the best recomendations for the OP's expressed needs.

Yeah but maybe he don't like farming with junk!

I might go down to a 6 footer with that power of tractor.

Yeah, just mowing with junk... ;)

(I can say that now without appearing to be biased...I've got a Kubota for the time being)

Power has to be considered, WEIGHT has to be considered.....I'm with ya on this. I'd rather SLIGHTLY under size and retain maximum balance and control unless all the mowing is in a large open area. For "weed eater" mowing (tight confines, rough ground, ditches. ect) I'm all in favor of a smaller mower. That's the rationale' behind us using 6' mowers behind 70hp tractors for close quarters operation on highway ROW mowing.

First off I think your looking at the right brand;)

M5040 can handle the 8'ft pull-type just fine in tough stuff and a 12ft in the light stuff.............. 5040 and ds1440.JPG

You describe doing sides of roads. We have both an MX6 rotary and a Caroni TM1900 flail. If you can"t drive ON the roadside ditch then a flail that can be offset (most can I believe) is much better than a rotary that usually can't. Our flail sticks out about 16 inches with max offset and by driving carefully along you can do a very respectable job of cutting back a roadside ditch, which isn't possible with our rotary. Flail does a better mulching job as well. For trails if rough stuff a rotary is probably better and much cheaper to maintain, if smooth trails and cutting weeds and grasses either will do fine.
