Took 4 years but finally scored a smokin deal on a used 6' KK. When i checked the fluid levels on both the cear box and the gear case i noticed the the vents are not a "free flowing' vent meaning that when i put a little air to them no air came out. Are they supposed to be like this? Does pressure build to a certian point then it releases it? When i took it out of the side cover you could hear the air hissing out, its less than a year old and has only been used twice to till about 1 acre. Just want to make sure everything is good to go before i put it to work...................

Not sure if the same thing would apply but I have a bush hog that like's to blow out output shaft seals. I talked to a fellow that knows a great deal about brush hogs. He told me to remove the spring/ball/filler plug breather on the gear box and replace it with with a standard pipe plug with cross drilled hole with a cotter key in it. That being something I had to make myself, and to date seems to be working. It weeps oil slightly, but definitely gets rid of the gearbox pressure.
Hope this helps.

I took my vents apart and shorted the springs so you could blow thru them, I think what happens when they crimp the cap on the plug, they dimple the center of the cap to much and it causes more pressure on the spring causing higher vent release pressure in the gear box.

That would do the trick, how did you take them apart?

usually the top caps are pressed on and can be popped off with a screwdriver. That's how I took mine apart.

It might be just dirty. I checked mine at least twice a year by shaking it. If the ball rattled, it was good. If not, I'd soak it in diesel fuel for a while till it loosened up inside. Then I blew it out with compressed air.
