Shopping for a rotary mower for my CK20HST. Found the following prices for 5' light(er) duty mowers.

Bush Hog Squealer....$1500 slip clutch, 65-hp gearbox, 636-lb, 11-ga deck
Rhino RB-60.............$1200 slip clutch, 60-hp gearbox, 522-lb, 11-ga deck
Land Pride...............$1100 slip clutch, 50-hp gearbox, 478-lb, 12-ga deck
King Kutter................$800 shear bolt, 40-hp gearbox, 525-lb, 12-ga deck
County Line TSC........$800 shear bolt, 40-hp gearbox, 535-lb, 12-ga deck
Tarter......................$900 shear bolt, 45-hp gearbox, 450-lb, 13-ga deck
Howse.....................$760 shear bolt, 55-hp gearbox, 507-lb, 12-ga deck

The Bush Hog and Rhino mowers looked like a Lexus compared to the others. Deck edges were rolled over and continuously welded to the sides. The paint on each of them was flawless and looked like several coats. Everything looked heavy duty and I cannot believe there isn't more of a difference in weight. I could jump up and down on the decks and there was no deflection or 'tin can' noise. Would buy either if price was no object. They looked like lifetime investments.

The King Kutter and the County Line already had rust at the joints and welds. Tops were sheet metal just dropped on a frame with a 1-2" weld every six inches or so. Looked like one thin coat of not very good paint on them. The bracing did not look very strong either.

The Tarter looked better than the specs, didn't see any rust. Got the impression it was very light duty. I newer laid eyes on the Land Pride, when I told the Kubota dealer I had a Kioti he seemed to loose interest in selling me a mower.

I am getting the Howse. Cheapest, higher rated gearbox, bracing looked better especially at the 3-pt attachments, and the paint looked better.

The Howse is at a local yokel side of the road place that picks up a truck load every other week and sells out before they can get more of them. They undercut everybody elses prices and sell a bunch of stuff. Started out rebuilding red belly Fords. Located in the middle of nowhere and always a line of older farmers buying parts. Everybody seems to know what they are doing....my kind of place.

I know the Howse is light duty buy I don't think Willey E. (Kioti) has enough horsepower to tear much up. Most of the work I have for the mower is cleaning out around grown up ponds, fence rows, and the out of way places you can't get with even the small Ford we ususlly use.

Thanks for posting the various prices.I looked at a 5 foot orange Landpride at dealer yesterday for my ck 25. I can brag on the Howse brand rotary mowers,as I have two 6 footers. The first one was so dependable after 12 years I bought the same thing from a neighbor that was shed kept and hardly used he didnt need. I ought to hook up one to my ck25 just to see if it can handle it. Probably too heavy and pull its guts out I am guessing.

I did not do much shopping around, really needed something to cut 20 acres and wanted something I could use with my 12HP Kubota so it looks out of place on my MF135. I can mow up to 18 inches in 4th gear in the MF, 36 inches in 3 gear. That equates to about 2.5 acres an hour. You really need a smooth field for these speeds. On the kubota its great for trail work limited to slow speeds.

I don't even remember what brand it is except the gear box has Woods cast on the side. It is 4 foot, weighs 478 lbs and cost me 1,500 up here in Canada.

I really wanted to buy a used one but all I can find is either rusted out, welded in several places, or bent up so bad it would scare me to turn the p.t.o. on. The only ones I have found that looked half way decent were $500. Why pay that much for somebody elses problems when a new one is a couple hundred more.

Let a 5' Bush Hog Squealer get away from me at an auction earlier in the year. It went for $350. You snooze and you loose, I guess I was snoozing.

Yes 350.00 sounds cheap. After looking at a bushhog squeeler I was impressed.Does anyone have the Landpride brand to comment on after using it? Is it worth the extra money for the squeeler over the landpride or king kutter? These are the local brands, within 50 miles.

Not really comparing apples to apples in the case of the Land Pride .. You're putting up the entry level RCR 12 series against the Squealer and Rhino.
The comparable LP unit would be the RCR 18 series with an 11 ga. deck, 599 lbs. and gearbox rated to 65 HP, or the new for 2011 RCF 20 series with a 10 ga. deck, 620 lbs and 65 HP gearbox.

I have not seen an RCF 20 series in person yet, but on paper it looks pretty impressive! I hope to see one in the Spring, and trade up from my Woods BBX-60.

Dont be afraid of welds on a Bush hog. If you have one you will weld on it too. Unless you buy one way to heavy for your tractor you will bend something either catching it on a tress turning, backing into something or on those thin sided ones like i have throwing big rocks under the decks tear the sides out or puncture holes in it.

Wanted to add i think i paid $300 or $400 for my Jbar bushhog when i bought my tractor. Its light dudy as you can tell from the distruction i have detailed that i have done. mine is a 48" cut.
