How To Remove PTO Overspin Clutch

I have a Ford 8N which came with an overspin clutch on the PTO. I've just gotten a JD650 and want to transfer the clutch to the new machine, but can't figure out how to get the clutch off the 8N. I've tried lining up the grease fitting holes with the holes in the clutch, but that doesn't seem to help. I even went to Tractor Supply and read the instructions about how to put one on a shaft. But no help in understanding how to get it off.

Can anyone explain how to do this?

once you line up the holes then you have to drive the hollow 2"x5/16" roll pin out using a drift.

sometimes it gets filled with grease and is hard to see.. us a nail or piece of bailing wire to probe with. obviously both fittings must come out on either side to drive the pin out.

that is assuming you have a pin on and not a quick releasy type that uses a sliding collar that you pull back on, or rotate.. etc.

I'm pretty sure your JD650 has an independent PTO, which means you don't need the overrunning coupler from 8N...BobG in VA

though it would save his pto brake.. which is why O use an ORC on many independent pto setups.

Thanks Soundguy - You were correct. I punched out the pin with a nail set. Unfortunately, that broke the pin and I had to find a new one. Putting it into the overspin clutch on the JD650 was a real pain because the shroud over the PTO gives you no room with the hammer and I couldn't get the bolts off to remove the shroud. Anyway, I finally got it on -- sort of. I couldn't pound the pin in far enough to get a really good connection with the second grease fitting, but it's on there.

Bob G. - if the 650 does have an independent PTO it's too late now. I'll never get the **** OS Clutch off without taking half the rear end off.

I think the PTO shaft on the 8n is 1 1/8 and on the JD 1 3/8, so I don't think the ORC will fit anyway, but otherwise soundguy is right on.

The newer overrun clutches dont use pins, they use a slip coller like a normel pto shaft has. Thats what mine has. I HATE those pesky piins

You're spot on with the shaft OD's. That's the difference between the "old and the new" standard.

I replaced the entire pto shaft on my FIL's old 9N to the newer 1 3/8".

Then I added the over-run clutch... 'cause the pto is not "independent" and I hate it when the rake tries to push me into the trees at the edge of the field!!

I like the ORC and would not run my ford without it, a new one with the right shaft size is only about $50

Well, now you guys have gotten me completely confused, because the OD clutch fit on the JD PTO just fine. I've had the 8N (1952 serial number) so long I'd forgotten whether the tractor dealer changed the PTO shaft to the "new" standard. However, I found a PTO shaft in the old tool box that must have been the "old" one. Anyway, the OD fit the JD650 just fine and it has the "old" style pin that is, for now at least, a "permanent" fixture on the JD.
