In preparation for Y2K I purchased a Generac XL4000 portable and a Generac PTO 25 generator rated 25kw continuous and 50kw surge for use on my 1720 Ford with 23 PTO hp. To date I have used both with no problems.
Due to the recent flooding disasters I have once again been reading posts on generators and 1 post in particular regarding generators with poor quality power output that caused costly damage to electrical devices that exceeded the cost of the generator by a large margin.
My question;
Has anyone had problems with either of these units particularly the PTO unit.
Both units are brush type, pros/cons??
I monitor HZ & Voltage I also watch the lights & appliances for surging/dimming what other signs are there of poor power quality?

no experience w. either, but for delicate equipment--like computers, etc,--running an UPS in front of them will give you a wide safety margin.

Can't speak to those specific models but you'll see you clocks losing or adding time. This is related to hertz but there my not be much you can do on these units. Try an limit electronic loads while running them.

i don't have either of those units.. but have run my house and well on my northstar pto genset many, many times during hurricane season, and when power was being run out to my farm.

if rpm control is good.. frew control will be good.

if you keep the electrical load below the mechanical cability of the power source ( traftor ), and within it's govbernor range and response time, and set your rpm correctly for 60hz/ pto speed specified by the genset.. you should be ok.

should be way better looking wave than an inverter.

brush type may make a lil noise.. but for most appliances.. no biggie.

devices yusing trnasformers liekly won't notices, and power supplies with even a small amount of fitlering won't notice.. with triac based 'switching' power supplies the mst immune to votlage lags etc...

i had the generac 25 kw unit, run off my new holland 1520, it ran the house well, never had electronic problems with mine, would handle the well pump, freezers, refrigerator, lights and furnace no problem, i would set the freq meter on 62 flip the transfer breakers and it would drop to 60 and run there with no problem.
