New Holland TL100A
I am considering a 3 pt hook up log splitter for my New Holland TL100A. I don't know if this is a good idea. In looking at splitters there appears some variables like "open or closed valves" , alternate points of connection etc. that are greek to me. Also, I looked at one posting that suggested I could damage my tractor if not installed properly.

My alternative is to buy a self contained splitter. If someone have some high level insights or opinions I would appreciate them...Many Thanks!

Welcome to TBN... If this is your tractor:

It looks like it's an Open Center. (without the "A", seems to be closed center). Do you already have rear hydraulic remotes on the tractor? because if you don't, your looking at some $$$ to add those on top of the splitter.

I have been going through this thought myself and with some wise input and thinking through scenarios, I believe the self contained is the way to go. First it's not adding hours to your tractor, second is storage and barndoor clearance- The 3 points in the transport mode will be pretty wide from what I have seen. Time in hookup goes to the self-contained. The self-contained gives you more options if you just want to take a four wheeler or truck out and use the splitter. This allows you to keep your tractor free for hauling bigger loads or lifting logs if necessary. I don't feel like there is a good enough price break for using my tractor. Also this way if you need to use it at another property you are not forced to take your tractor along....just my thoughts.

Dwight,

That is some pretty good thinking. I was just tstarting to think I need to get a splitter and considering using the tractor.

You bring up some very valid points sir. Thanks for giving me food for thought.
Be well,
David

Agree very good points. I too, do not understand why the price difference between the self contained and 3 pt isn't greater....Thanks!

no rear remotes, good point..thx
This is a great excuse... oops, I mean reason to get them!!! It's few to several hundred bucks depending on how many you get. If you are not planning to get a grapple or use a hydraulic TopLink... it would be over kill for just a splitter.

I had this same debate before purchasing my stand-alone splitter. Wanted at avoid another motor to maintain- but the need to use loader as a lifting work table override the one-motor desire. Haven't looked back. I just opted for a stand-alone generator for essentially the same reason.
