kubota L3410
I'm a newbie at information gathering via this site. I own a Kubota L3410 (35hp). I have 10-15 acres of pasture available to bale for hay, but not sure i have the power to run the baler, or mower. I'm sure the rake would be fine. Anybody know whether this will work, if I dont pull the wagons and just shoot the bales onto the ground. If so, any suggestions on balers. Locally there is a IH 46 for sale.

I have a L3010 32 hp tractor and I baled with a little Case International baler. I'm thinking it was and 8420 maybe. That baler made a 4 x 4 Bale, handled it fine. I used a old Ford 801 siclkle bar mower, I know NH makes a disc mower thats just under 6'. Thought about buying one, but got tired of losing money on cows and sold my all my equipment.

You should be able to handle that IH 46 baler with the pto hp you have. My MF124 baler is rated at 34 hp pto (min), but I've seen videos of that baler operated successfully by a Farmall Super A that has less than 20 hp pto. My neighbor has run an IH 57W baler that's pretty much the size of that IH47 with his Ford 8N tractor that has around 20 hp pto. Unfortunately, he neglected to install an over running clutch on the pto shaft to the baler and managed to twist that part of the pto shaft that's inside the tractor's transmission. You won't have this problem since your 3410 has that type of pto clutch installed internally. Many balers the size of that IH46 have been run with a Wisconsin engine around 20 hp mounted on the baler and turning the flywheel via a belt drive.

Just be sure to check out that IH46 baler thoroughly before you buy. Especially check inside the bale chamber and look for damage and rusted sheet metal. Some of these old balers are a mess with holes rusted through the sheet metal and need a lot of repair work.

Good luck

For baling you should look at getting a small square baler.

For mowing, don't let hay grow too tall before you mow. This will help when balng. Mower size needs to small. Old NH489 or 7' sickle bar mower.

After a few cuts you will find what works best for your equipment.

We bale hay (including kicking hay into the wagons) with a L3830 and a NH Hayliner 273(?). We cut with a NH 489 mower condicioner and rake with a 18' Enrossi rake or an old rollbar side delivery rake.

I wouldn't want to have any less tractor for pulling the baler and a wagon, but you should be ok with something similar if you are just pulling a baler and dropping bales on the ground.

The Wolagri Mini Baler which is mini round baler would
work well for you and you can also wrap the bales with
plastic as they exit the bale chamber if you purchase
the model with the bale wrapper.

The Wolagri USA dealer is just over the New York/Pennsylvamia
border from me in Pennsylvania.

I would contact Ken Sweet here on the forum as he is a forum sponsor
and can provide you with a low power disc mower for your needs as well.

I've been baling with a 35 hp JD tractor for 20 years. Baler is a 1955 JD 14T. Before that, I used a 22 hp Yanmar on the same baler. It didn't even have a live pto or 2 stage clutch. If anything, get some front weights and rear tires loaded to provide some inertia.

Back in the old days my father was an IH dealer. He sold a lot of IH 45 balers to farmers with Farmall H tractors. The H is 26 belt horsepower (back in 1939 when they did the Nebraska Tractor Test on the H they used the belt pully instead of PTO for power testing). The 46 is the update on the 45. I remember the knotter being a problem. Dad switched to selling New Holland balers and pretty much wiped out the IH population. Dad wouldn't take the IH balers on trade so they ended up being parked out in the back 40's or wherever else you couldn't see them from the road and be embarrassed for owning one. I think your tractor will handle it power wise but somebody on one of these forums said that the plunger style balers are hard on the powertrain of a CUT.
