Howdy, folks. I'll be picking up a used LR1584 rake this week. I'll have to muscle it up into the (high) bed of my Ram 2500.

This would be a lot easier if I could partially disassemble the rake. Looking at the manual online, it seems I can just remove a cotter pin and slotted hex nut, and then pull the main frame (the part you hitch to) from the rake itself.

Is my understanding correct?

thanks, bws

I looked that the manual too and you are correct. Disconnect the pivot and you will separate the rake from the hitch beam.

Seeing as how you're buying a tractor implement, I'm going out on a limb here and assuming you've got a tractor. I'll then further assume you've got a trailer for it. If I got extremely lucky and guessed right on both accounts, why not take the tractor to the rake? Drive the tractor off the trailer, mount the rake on the tractor, drive the tractor back onto the trailer and take your new purchase home. Plus you have the added benefit of finding out if anything's wrong with the rake BEFORE you take out the checkbook.

Good assumptions, both. However, tractor and trailer both are on another property 45 minutes in the wrong direction. It's a Craigslist buy, and the seller is meeting me in a parking lot to get it closer to me--and that's 60 miles away in the other direction. So, no, putting the tractor on the trailer and taking it to pick up the rake is a nonstarter. I'd rather muscle it. Of course, it's not just getting the rake in the truck, it's getting it out, too. I want the rake at home for now, not at the other property. Disassembled makes unloading easier, too.

I never could figure out what I would want one of those receiver hitch cranes for. Now I know.

Can I assume he is bringing it in a pickup truck? If so, back them up back to back and use a movers dolly to roll it from one to the other. If he is using a trailer, borrow a set of ramps and pull it up with a come a long or borrow an engine hoist and drive under it once lifted....remember you only get one spine in this world.

How about a piece of plywood between the tailgates? Maybe a pipe for a roller, too.

Turned out to be the piece of cake I had hoped. 45 seconds to wiggle out the cotter pin, 5 seconds to remove the slotted hex nut and pivot disk, lift the frame and there you are, two manageable pieces.
