John Deere 8a what does it fit?
I have a 1992 John deere 8a backhoe installed on a 2 wheel drive 39 horse 1992 John Deere 1070 tractor. I wanted a subframe backhoe and had a budget so I found this one. The 1070 is the size I need but i should have held out for a 4 wheel driver tractor. Now i'm thinking i could look for another John Deere 4 WD tractor to install the 8a hoe onto. However, I'm not sure what tractors i should look for and are compatible. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Re: John Deere 8a what does it fit?
The directly compatible tractors would be a 4wd 1070, 990, or 4005. JD also used a hoe about that size on the 5000 series in the 90's IIRC, not sure if it was the 8a or something else though. Regardless the subframe will only fit the yanmar based tractors (1070, 990, 4005) so that's where I'd start looking.

Too big for any of them...
We had a TBNer who built or modified a subframe and installed an 8A loader on a deere 4200...which means you could do the same on a 4300, 4400, 4310 or 4410. IIRC, it came off a 970.
The TBNer's nick is Arrabil. He hasn't posted in a year or more, but if you search using his nick, I'm sure you'll find the thread on how he did the job.Roy Jackson

Re: John Deere 8a what does it fit?
Thanks. I found the thread, it was very cool, smart guy. This defiitely reassured me that I want a subframe hoe. Probably a little more technical than I could get into though. I see an 850 4 WD that the delaer says 28HP and but the "tractordata.com" website says 22 HP so I'm confused. The same site says that the 850 uses an 8a hoe. I'm wondering if the subframe, power assist hydraulics etc would all work and if this tractor is really 28 HP? if anyone has any insight that would be great. thanks to all that have helped so far.

Re: John Deere 8a what does it fit?
The dealer is probably giving you the gross engine HP (always higher then the PTO HP). The PTO HP is (IMHO) a better method of expressing a tractor's usable power. An example is my deere 4400: 35 Gross Engine HP, 30 PTO HP for a gear transmission tractor. The HST model is a little less PTO HP.
Drawbar HP only really applies to larger utility tractor that draw (tow) ground engaging implements behind them.Roy Jackson

Re: John Deere 8a what does it fit?
i do believe that the 8a fits the 950 and the 850 both have light duty hydraulics,i have a 950 and was looking for an 8a and was told about the hydraulics.not to say that you would not enjoy the 8a hoe but for heavy work not so good.by the way my 950 is 27 hp.

If it helps, My cousin has the 950 deere 4x4 with the 8a hoe on it. Other than the weird linkage for the swing function,it has held up well.
