Rotary Cutter What size rotary cutter for a JD 855

Hello. I'm wondering what size cutter would fit on the back of my John Deere 855. I've got a Land Pride RTR0550, a 50 inch reverse tine tiller, which runs effortlessly behind my 4x4 855. Would I want 4 ft? 5 ft? I've got 5 acres of scotchbroom, vine maple, filbert, fern, salal, Oregon grape, etc that I'm continuously cutting, dragging and burning so I can plant apple trees. I'd love to be able to mow around them and eventually make my clear cut more like a homestead.

Consider these facts in regards to your Tractor. Engine HP-24 PTO-HP-19 rear lift-785 lbs. Using these specs, your tractor would probably be best suited for a 4-foot rotary cutter. Just my thoughts.:tractor:

Looks like you have 19 PTO HP. If the field is kept cut fairly regularly, you might be able to a medium 5 foot mower, but if it's thick, nasty stuff let go for months between cuts, then probably a 4' would be better. Remember, you can always buy a 5' and cut a smaller swath if it's real heavy, but have 5' available when it's light cutting.
Funny thing: I have a BX2200 with a little under 17 PTO HP and it will run a 90" finish mower through 8" grass!!!
It runs a 4' bush hog with no problem.

Remember, you can always buy a 5' and cut a smaller swath if it's real heavy, but have 5' available when it's light cutting.

No, you cut the swath smaller. Let's say 3' with a 5' mower. Then the mower is cutting 3' of weeds and 2' is overlapped and not cutting anything. :laughing:

Dad has run a 5' mower on his 755 and we run the same mower on our Kubota B7500 (21 Engine HP, 17ish PTO hp). In thick stuff (knee high hay field), the B7500 had to crawl, but it mowed it.
I would go for a 5' one.
