John Deere Van Brunt grain drill questions

I have looked at several threads on this topic, but none appear to be the same one as pictured below. From my perspective, it looks to be in pretty good shape.

I may be able to buy this, but first need answers to several questions.

1. What model is it and about how old?
2. Are parts available?
3. Is a manual available?
4. Is it suitable for planting various food plots?
5. What's it worth?

Judging from the hitch and depth setting hand wheel, I'd guess it to be an 11 X 7 FB-A. Does it have a tag on the left end plate (standing behind it)? Some of the older drills had model and serial numbers painted on the back. Probably 50 or so years old. Some parts and the manual are available from JD, manuals are available on ebay. In decent shape, they work great for food plots. If it's not froze up and rusted out, it ought to be worth 150 - 250 bucks. Check it out for rust in the bottoms of the seed cups, the divider between the seed and fertilizer boxes, and both boxes overall. Make sure all the controls and levers can be moved. If it's had seed left in the box, chances are the seed gates are rusted. Don't try to force anything. The fact it's in a shed is a plus. Most of the ones I see are in fence rows. Here's a picture of my FB, it's pretty similar. Channeled down from a 17 X 7.

I don't own a JD drill, but I've restored several Minneapolis Moline P3-6 drills (10-ft wide, 20 drops, single disk openers).




Your drill looks to be in pretty good condition. Before you buy, hook it up to a tractor or to your car/truck and operate it. Look for jamming in the fluted feeds and be sure that trip clutch works OK. If there's rust on the box, I'd spray it with cold galvanize paint.

I looks like I have the same unit, it is 10 feet wide, I have no idea of the make, I busted mine down to a 5 footer, for the parts, can not find a manual, it works great for plant food plots. Several difernt seeds can go throw it, mine has the grass seeder aswell. I paid $150.00 for mine and love it, works great, just needs grease.
