Hi All,

I am looking seriously at a logging arch and want to know if anyone has any expirence using one. The prices seem to range from about $600 to $2000 and the focus is primarly on ATV use. Each of the four mfgs I talked to said that the archs will work great on a CUT. I have a Kubota 175 and think that this may be the safest way to move logs. What do the rest of you think?

There have been several forum threads here (search on "Logging Arch", "Forestry Winches") that discuss the different approaches and ideas that may help you decide what you want to get to suit your needs. Myself, I use the I-Match hitch as the "arch" and hang my logging tongs on it to bring logs out of the woods The logs drag on one end but don't get too dirty. I wouldn't want to have to try to maneuver the two-wheeled "carts" around in the woods that carry the logs. Just a preference. For long hauls, the "carry" idea probably is best.

Thats alot of money. I saw what was called a Quadskidder on a web page (montanajack.com). It is a really good idea, but the package was expen$ive. I have chain binders and some steel. It cost me $30 to have a piece of steel cut to 20 x 40 x 1/4. Then bend to a 45 degree angle with a radius. Weld on the angle iron lip and a couple of links of chain and it was done. I used my Honda Foreman and this skidder to bring out cedar and spruce logs from a low area. Worked great, and the tractor would never get back there.

number five...

I used my homemade one again last weekend. I had a Elm tree with several branches come down in a ice storm. Since the tree was slowly dying, and it was near the house, I took it down. Now with the frost just barely out of the ground, and slightly muddy, the skidder plate worked just great. Again.
