Where do you buy your logging/utility chains?

All,

Am looking to purchase some utility chains, 3/8" with grab hooks, 15-20' in length. Looked at the local TSC but a 20 footer in the size I'm looking for is $69.99. Is that about the right price?? I never priced chains before, so I'm kinda in dark about this.

I live in a decent sized town, is there some other type of supplier for chains other than the big-box Home Improvement stores??

Saw 5/16" Grade 70 tow chain with grab hooks 20' long in storage bag in Lowe's this evening for less than $40. They also had a 3/8" logging chain with hooks that was 14' long for $30 or so. I picked my first one up at a industrial supply house cut to length as requested. The last one I picked up at Lowe's. Price was hard to beat. I have both 3/8" and 5/16" chains and, in my opinion, the 5/16" is easier to handle.

check with tractor/trailer dealer or parts distributor , tarp shop . they are widely used on flatbed loads in the trucking industry .

If it is a true util/logging chain and not a transport or tie down chain I would look at Harbor Freight or Northern. Paint it an odd color so it does not get used on a trailer and hook it up.

I get mine at Harbor freight. Beat the heck out of it. Abuse it. Let it rust. Works fine.

I was surprised to get a reasonable price from my John Deere dealer on hardened 3/8ths chain. I got my other chains from another dealer 15 years ago. I think local dealers are able to be competitive because of the high shipping cost for heavy chains.

Beware that chain comes in different grades. The 3/8" size does not indicate what grade. Your dealer will probably offer the higher or highest grades, but you should ask them what you are getting. You may be able to find the same size/grade on eBay or some other web site.

Garage sales and auctions are a good place to find them. Never bought a new one
