Was cleaning out a fence row at the oldest daughter's house. I would cut the bigger trees close to the ground and drag them with a chain on the bucket to put them in an old pond.
Unchain them and throw the 20' log chain on the mower deck and go back for another. Have done this for thirty years with the old tractor and mower. After an hour or so I had a strip cleared enough I could mow over the area. Luckily I had the tractor idling when I engaged the pto. I heard that chain rattling and clutched it just as the chain tightened up. You know those little holes in the deck of all the new rotary mowers have a hole so you can get to the bolt that holds the blade on the stump jumper. Well a chain rattling around on the deck as you drive across a field will find that hole and catch on the stump jumper bolts. I know I'm not the first to do this but thought I would warn others.

I cut a steel plate to put over mine. I drilled two mounting holes in the deck and stuck bolts through from the bottom and tack welded them so I can easily remove the plate without having someone else to hold the back side of the bolt.

Dang , Now I know what that circle plate is that is bolted on the upper side of my N.H. "hog" :) . Seriously , Great catch , not sure if you have a slip clutch or like mine a shear bolt . Nothing like breaking a shear bolt , "THEN" realizing you already used your last one , and now have to make a trip to town for more .:ashamed: ( You don't need to ask why I mentioned that .:( ) .

Honestly , never had to use that plate yet , did not even know what is was used for , just knew it was there .

I sort of did the same thing except that I used a single bolt and a nyloc nut tightened just enough to hold the plate in place snugly and I simply rotate it to access the blade bolts.
