Just picked up this New Idea #400 bar rake. It's been run into the ground, but with a little work I should be able to make it do all I need to do with it.

My first problem to tackle is where the rake "wheel" (not sure the correct term) attaches to the output shaft coming out of the gearbox. As you can see from the pics, it slid out at one point. Instead of fixing it, the previous owner put a bolt through the rake wheel and the shaft (it is rotated so you can't see it in the pic) and kept running it like that. Not exactly what I would have done, but it's what I've got to work with.

The bearing seemed fine, so I greased it and am trying to get it back together. I can't seem to get it to slide together though. I lifted up on the rake wheel with the cherry picker and can align it horizontally, but it needs to move sideways a little. It seems to me like a couple good smacks with a sledge should slide it together, but it won't move. Any suggestions? Has anyone worked on these and could offer some advice?

Does anyone by chance have a parts diagram or something so I can see what it's supposed to be like?

Thanks!

From what I see, the gearbox cover may have to come off to see what is going on inside or is the wheel just slid forward? Ken Sweet

I think the wheel is just slid forward, but I'm not sure. Here is another pic so you can see the end of the shaft. Seems to me like the wheel should slide back on, and then something go on the end of the shaft (castle nut maybe?). I'm just not sure what I'm trying to work towards. The seller said that he thought a castle nut went on the shaft, but the shaft looks more splined than threaded. Maybe it's just worn though.

Also a pic where you can see the hole in the wheel where the other person put a bolt through to hold the wheel on.

I would think the shaft would be splined or keyed. I can't imagine why someone would drill a hole for the bolt unless they are having the same problem that you are having. You may want to consider taking the wheel off to see what is going on and get to the bottom of the problem? Ken Sweet

I think that's what I'll have to do. I'll let you know what I find out. Thanks.

Pulled the wheel off this morning. That didn't help much so I took the gearbox cover off - then I saw the problem. The bevel gear on the shaft had come off along with the inner bearing. Worked on it and got it back together. I can't figure out what holds it all together though. If I wanted to I could just pull the shaft back out. There's got to be something missing. It looks like maybe a set screw goes in the shaft on the bevel gear, but I can't see how that would hold it all together. I need to find a dealer or someone who has a parts diagram so I can see what is supposed to be there.

I can't fit the rake through my shop door, so with this rain coming I may have to put this project on hold for a couple days. I'll let you know what happens. In the meantime, any thoughts are welcome!

Thanks

Wow, thanks. The link won't work though. Can you get parts for me? I'll just stop by there tomorrow morning and take a look at the diagram. (I'm the one that's been working on the Ford 501 sickle bar).

Thanks again.

Go to Agcopartsbooks.com and then click on New Idea in the drop down menu and put in 400 in the Model box. The parts breakdown for the 400 gearbox is on the left side of the page. Be glad to help, if we can? We get our New Idea parts from Messicks.com. Ken Sweet

Got on agcoparts and was able to see the diagram. From that I see that a long rivet that goes through the shaft and holds the bevel gear on is missing. I'll take a look at it when I can, and maybe I can just use the right size bolt and lock nut instead of the rivet. I'll see what I can come up with.

Thanks again for the help.
