I bought a JD 71-Flex Planter a while back, and just got around to looking at the Planting Plates that came with it.

I got a B015-16 (16 cell) Sunflower plate and a BFR-2 Sunflower "Filler Ring" which (according to the Lincoln Ag website) is supposed to be used along with the regular planting plate.

I don't have a clue how to use this "Filler Ring" or exactly where it goes in relation to the 16-cell plate. Any help, guys?

Thanks! Hope everyone had a nice Christmas...

(One of my daughters brought over this large plastic mural that you put on the window and put a lamp on behind it so it shows up from outside. The mural is the lamp on the lady's stockinged-leg from Christmas Story  It looks great from the outside!)

The only problem I had was the deer annihalated them when the plants got the 3 set of leaves. Almost overnight I had sunflower stems with no leaves. HTH Mark

I planted 3 acres of sunflowers with a 71 planter. I don't recall the sunflower plate number. I called Lincoln Ag, told them I was planting black oil seeds, and they recommended a plate. I did use the backer plate. I used seeds straight out of a bag of bird feeder seeds from TSC. That's the good thing about planting sunflowers; you don't have to buy any special seeds from Co-Op.

Well now the good news and the bad news; the planter planted the seeds just as planned; good spacing, few doubles, great germination. The bad news; the deer mauled every single plant. Not one sunflower plant got to maturity. The dove hunt I was planning never happened. Deer love sunflowers.

The filler ring goes under the sunflower plate in the seed hopper. It takes up space under the seed plate. I tried planting sunflowers this year with a 70 Flexi, using a sunflower plate. I forget the #, the seeds I wanted to plant were too big to use either sunflower plate I have. Had to use a corn plate (again I forget the plate #). The 1st picture shows the fit of the seed to the corn plate. It doesn't show the side view of the seed in the cell of the plate. That's where the filler ring would come into play. The next couple of pictures show the fit of the seeds to the plates I tried on the bence before deciding on which plate to use. The red plate is a BO30-24. Two of the seeds are black oil, the third is a giant variety. Notice the fit. The green plate is the corn plate, again notice the fit of the seeds in the plate cells. Ended up using the red BO30-24/BFR-2 filler for the black oil seeds, and the green corn plate for the giant variety. I don't know if this is the proper way to determine the plate to use, but it worked for me. I planted about 1/4 acre of each, germination was good with few skips or doubles. The only problem I had was the deer annihalated them when the plants got the 3 set of leaves. Almost overnight I had sunflower stems with no leaves. HTH Mark
