WoodMaxx Chippers

Anyone purchased one? I saw one thread where I believe someone did however it was an older thread and did not get a lot out of it. I'm considering buying a chipper as I have a lot of branches (2"-8") and such all over my property mainly hardwood with some poplar as well. I have rented a unit previously and it did a great job but I can only get so much done in a weekend and that's at $200+ a crack. I'm thinking that perhaps buying one makes more sense as I have a few miles of trails that I would like to cover with chips and if/when I'm done with it, I can sell it. I know the standalone models are heavy duty but are very costly even used plus it's another engine to maintain so I'm considering whether a PTO one makes more sense even though it likely won't resell as easily.

I know the WoodMaxx seems 'cheap' in price compared with Wallensteins and I am not sure why.

As you wrote, there was a thread on the WoodMaxx chipper not too long ago (since summer of 2011, I believe).
The WoodMaxx is a chinese import and, like the Jimna's, be prepared to do some work on it.
Like any chinese imports, some folks swear by 'em, some swear at 'em.
I don't buy anything from China, if I can buy US or Canadian made. I'd rather pay more money and get the better quality.

I know the standalone models are heavy duty but are very costly even used plus it's another engine to maintain so I'm considering whether a PTO one makes more sense even though it likely won't resell as easily.

Used PTO chippers sell pretty quickly, BTW, if they're in decent shape. I daresay they sell faster then engine driven units (of comparable chipping capacity).

Mine is a Woods 5000 Chipper/Shredder. Bought it used and I'm quite happy with it. Found mine on the local Craigslist.

Thanks Roy. I wasn't sure whether WoodMaxx was Chinese made and my personal preference is not to purchase from there. I find too many things are being made there and many are of poor quality so I'll keep looking for a used chipper and hope I find one. I like the PTO chipper for one less engine to maintain and ease of getting at various locations on my property. I can see me having some problems with getting a standalone unit to some areas.

Keep an eye on Craigslist (if it's available in Canada). Do be prepared to move quickly...as I wrote, they go fast.

The Woods 5000 I boought was probably 5 or 6 years old. Although the paint was faded, all the warning stickers were quite ledgible. The seller was asking $1000 US, so that's what I carried (with the intent to negotiate the price). It was such a nice chipper, I just paid the $1000 and loaded up.
Do ask the seller to demo the chipper (I did...we ran a few branches through it). This chipper has a 5" capacity and a seperate shredder for small (<1") stuff

Also, do your homework...determine what sized chipper your tractor can run. Another thing is a blower. My Woods drops the chips under then unit. That works for me (although I'd rather have a blower) since my chipping consists of yard clean up every few months. Lots of trees here, so I get lots of downed limbs and branches.

BTW, with your MX5100, you can run a sizable chipper. I'd keep my eye out for a Valby chipper in your case. Expensive machines, but will last many many years.

Roy, sounds like you got an excellent deal on your chipper. I found something yesterday that I thought was a good price, a Wallenstein BX92s for $4500. It's a demo model and while I love the idea of being able to chip up to 9" pieces of downed/rotten poplar, it needs more HP than my tractor has. Still seems like a good deal though for those with larger tractors.
