From time to time in the past several folks have requested information about substantial wagons and trailers for compact tractors. While there are some available, many of us have had concerns about frame strength and durability when these units are used to carry big loads of soil, rocks, wood, etc.

I have just purchased a new wagon made by Kory Farm Equipment that is a scaled-down version of a full-sized farm wagon they manufacture. (See photos in this and followig posts.) It is rated to carry 3000 pounds and appears to be very well built. The running gear unit was $499 and the steel frame flatbed was $199. They are sold through farm implement dealers, Farm and Fleet, etc.

The tires are 18.5 x 8.5 - 8 tubless flotation type and the 5 bolt wheels are mounted on tapered roller bearings. The weight of the gear alone is 215 pounds and the weight of the bed frame is 90 pounds.

The flatbed is 4 feet by 8feet, and I plan to use 3/4 inch treated plywood for the flooring. The sides and end gates will be made from 5/4 x 5 1/2 inch treated deck lumber 3 pieces high for a total height of 16 1/2 inches.

One unusual aspect of this bed frame is that the stake pockets are welded to the inside of the outer frame tubes. The manufacturer tells me this was done to facilitate shipping in trucks. The end result is that you have to cut holes in the flooring for each of the 16 stakes to pass through. After placing the plywood on the bed you get underneath and mark each stake pocket location with a pencil, remove the plywood, and then cut out the 1 inch x 1 1/2 inch holes with a jigsaw. I had the lumberyard rip the 16 stakes out of a piece of 5/4 inch treated decking.

Will post some photos of the completed unit when I get it done.

For those interested the manufacturer is:

Hey, that's exactly what I've been looking for! Most of the wagons at the used implement places are too big or too expensive. That unit is pretty dandy looking and the price isn't too bad either. Thanks for the photos /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I got this wagon gear only from northern. I built a bed for it, and so far, its hauled about 2k lbs of rocks, it will haul 3 loader bucket fulls of mulch, tow it with the quads. I did have to replace the tie-rod ends and when the wagon came, one of the wheels was out of round. Called the manufacturer on the tag on the wagon, (its made in Canada) told them about the wheel, they sent a new one out to me right away. They didnt want the old one back. Only wish is that it had more ground clearance, but bigger tires would do that for it if i REALLY needed it. Overall, pretty darn good running gear, and I must say so myself, cause no-one else will, I did a :dandy" job on the dump bed for it too!

There are 5 bolts per wheel. These are actually wheels and tires used on some boat trailers. Even so the wagon is not rated for off-road use.

Yup, those trailers are cute. I see them parked out in front of the local Fleet Farm. Everything depends on your your equipment and needs. I bought a used set of running gear that could be shortened. For me, an old 3 ton hay wagon bought from a implement dealer for $100 hauls everything from wood to rocks to dirt. Bald tires and old wood in the deck, it's not pretty. I have to hide it in the woods to avoid complaints from the boss.
