Rear Blade Frontier Land Plane

I'm giving up on the box blade for trying to get our road and the new pasture level. The local Deere dealer has a Frontier LP1172 that he will give me for $1,000 plus tax.

My question is do i want a 6' or a 7'? We have a JD5105 and a 6' is going to ride in the tire tracks as near as i guess, a 7' would ride outside the tracks and i thought might level a bit better.

Seems like a reasonable deal, but wanted to solicit opinions.

I have an LP1196 that I use with a 5105 that I just purchased. The rear tires are set at 6 feet center to center. The rear tires outside to outside are about 7 feet wide which gives the land plane about 6 inches of overlap on each side of the tractor.

Measure your rear tires outside to outside and see what you need. I do recommend that the land plane at least cover the tire tracks.

I do like the deal the guy is offering us, but the wrong implement won't seem so affordable later when i'm not happy with it....

I use my landplane all the time and it is one of the handiest tools you can have for smoothing up drives and fields. I use mine primarily to smooth out lawn and pastures and built mine with straight set blades. Works extremely well for removing mounds and filling dips. I built this one in 2009 for about $900 to $950 with 96" double edged reversible grader blades. Weighs about 950 lbs and has skids that are 60" in length. I use this with my 4520 which is ballasted to about 5500lbs. Works great with a tractor of this weight and should work well with a 5105 ballasted. I limited mine to 8' blades so that my overall width is 102" for trailering and transport.

Several of us on the forum have found that wider is better because planing with a wide blade in opposing directions will give you a flatter finish. Same with longer skids, which average out the ground better. So the long and the short of it is get the largest plane you can. I prefer a plane with a lot of structural strength and rigidity and about 125 lbs/ft of width so mine is heavier than the Frontier.

Here are pictures of the 8ft landplane, 8ft spiked tooth harrow I built and my lawn that I used the landplane on to smooth it out.

The blades aren't adjustable on the Frontier and though maybe not as important, it doesn't have rip blades either. The Land Pride and Agri Ease both cost the same and have both those features. There all probably from China.
