None of my equipment sits outside although some did before I got it and has a layer of rust here and there. Nothing special but it bothers me and I would like to slow down further rust. I don't want to spray oil or diesel but have thought about getting a gallon or two of Fluid Film, thinning it with solvent and spraying the equipment. It would last me forever since the stuff is not in the rain. I like the way Fluid Film leaves the surface and how it creeps into every nook and cranny. I might use a cheap Harbor Freight $10 auto spray gun.
My concerns are has anyone ever thinned Fluid Film? I really don't need full strength and the point is to stretch product use . As well, I am told the environmental impact is zero but I doubt that. Should I could cover the ground with cheap plastic? Any other commentary or advice? Anything would be helpful since I'm a Fluid Film newby, only having used it to spray fertilizer parts after cleaning. Works 100%.

The company says that you can thin it with oil. To me, that would mean WD-40 (bulk, in a gallon container) would work well for thinning.

I thin it with 0-20 synthetic motor oil and that works well for a pump oiler. It just doesn't go through a pump spray gun well without thinning.

Fluid film does sell a special spray gun for their bulk product as well. It would even work better if the stuff were thinned.

Thanks for posting the heads up. Informative. Thanks to the OP also for posting the thread.

I also want to be concerned with the environmental impact of "in my back yard". I lived in Maine for many years and recall canoeing downstream from a woolen mill that washed the wool and dumped the waste. The lanolin ruined the lake for decades so there is some impact since i have seen it. And I am told Fluid Film is lanolin from wool.

The manufacturer of Fluid Film recommends using vegetable oil to thin it.

Here is the FAQ list from fluid film. Stuff sounds like it can be used in nearly any application you could think of. Looks like you should keep it off the ground, however, from a groundwater standpoint. And true, you do thin it with vegetable oil but I think I'll use it straight after reading that.
