Is there a way to tell if the steel is T1 or simple mild steel?

I'd like to know this myself, When I asked the same thing from the guy I had weld on mine all he said was " you get what you pay for , and T-1 steel is not cheap . That's why some grapples are into the big money and some are cheaper. I'm not saying that it's not T-1 but he said he couldn't have built it out of mild steel for what I paid for it. Still with a few mods he said it was a dam good grapple.
Maybe if there is no response try posting it on a welding thread :thumbsup:

First One,
The two sites that represent Titan grapples have done a lot of cleanup recently of their description of the number of tines and thickness, so I am wondering if the T1 reference is correct as well. They now list that the 72" rake grapple has 1/2" and your 60" having 3/8", so at least that part is correct.

There is no good difinitive way to tell the difference between T1 and plain mild steel that the average person would have access to.

T1 (a514) is supposed to be more abrasion resistant. So maybe try dragging the edge of a file across an area, and then do the exact same thing on a peice of mild steel you may have laying around and see if there is any difference:thumbsup:

Other than that, I cant think of any way without a sample peice of destroying part of the grapple.

Yea, without a properly equipped NDI (non destructive inspection) lab......happen to be near an aircraft overhaul facility? Is the one in Loring still operational?

Buck and MP, thx guys I exchanged e-mails with Anita-its the one listed as 48" Economy- My delivered price to Mass. is 700 bucks and change. A buddy of mine is at the Lyon Bros Auction in Fla this week and next for Ritchie Bros. I've been to both of their web sites and can't seem to find anuything-although nothing was really coming up on the RB site.

I would be using this with my Deere 4720, 58 HP- I am not a cowboy so it should be adequate. Its also not too heavy that one of my kids can't use on his 2520. Plus all you guys have been nothing but positive about Wildkat.

Do you HAVE this yet ?
If not I may want to join with you to see if we can get a twofer deal, at least on shipping.

I work with T-1 and can say that it definitely is harder to grind than A36. You don't really want to drill it either, been there. It is a premium material and has a different surface finish than A36 , hard to discern under powder-coat but more readily able to under duress. Worth the $'s if applied correctly, IMHO.

If you have an automatic center punch you could test it and then compare it to mild steel. You should see and feel a difference.

This is a good one. I have a small piece of T1, some AR400, some 1045 [med carbon] steel and, of course, some mild steel. On all except the T1 and the AR400 the auto punch makes a classic crater, displacing material down with an upward projecting rim. The AR440 gives a barely perceptible rim. On the T1 I can see the ding but cant even detect the rim. I was told once that T1 met or exceeded AR400 surface hardness but was hard clear thru. My results show it would be difficult to distinguish between AR400 or 500 and T1 with an autopunch, but pretty easy to contrast with the med and low carbon/mild steels.
