I'm in the midst of putting new blades on my Woods MMM. Any other maintenance I should be doing to this thing? I don't really see all that much to 'tune' but I'm probably missing something....

Thanks,

wickman

Cleaning and greasing would be a good idea. You should also check any belts for excessive wear and also check that there is no play in any bearings.

Being that you're putting on new blades, this doesn't count, but I thought I would mention it.
When you sharpen your blades, make sure they are balanced when you're done. When you grind the blade, its very easy to grind a little more off one side than the other. With the blades unbalanced like that, it will wear your bearings prematurely.

I always take a long straight edge and lay it from side to side and see if the blades are at the same height. I had to add a flat washer under one blade to make them at the same height.Sure made a difference in how the cut looks . Lube the belt tension pivot too.
My woods manual says to use 90W gear oil instead of grease in the bearings . I have used it for 2 years now with no problem . Just a couple of pumps of gear oil every other mowing .Less drag than grease.

What do you use to 'dispense' gear oil into a grease fitting? Does a grease gun work for gear oil?

Thanks, wickman

Beleive it or not , yes I use a grease gun . I got a cheep one at the local TSC and filled it with gear oil .I have to releive the plunger when I'm done 'cause it will leak past the piston , but it does dispense "oil" quite nicely. Very minimal mess if any.I replaced all the shafts , bearings , and seals last winter and it has worked great ever since.
