Stupid question

I really do understand that this is a stupid question, however here goes -

Does all 3 point hitch / PTO equipment fit any tractor with a 3 point hitch / PTO?

Example, if I have a JD baler will it work with a MF tractor?

From one brand of tractor to another, yes. But keep in mind that there are category I, II, and III 3-point hitches. The arms spread to different distances apart and the pins are different diameter. And there are some PTO output shafts with different splines, but most (not all) are alike.

That JD baler will have a particular recommendation for horsepower to operate it. If the MF tractor is within that horsepower range, it should work just fine.

Example: A neighbor bought a new Gehl baler and we used it mostly behind an old 85 hp Oliver, but he also used it some behind a 100 hp John Deere with an air-conditioned cab.

not a stupid question. don't worry about asking them as I have already asked all the stupid questions. three point hitches come in different catagories. cat 0 - cat 3 i think. all based on lift capacity and size. cat 0 is the smallest and cat 3 is larger. they also take different pin sizes as well. also watch your pto shaft length, as you can tear stuff up if it is not proper length. so all 3 point hitch impliments will NOT fit every tractor. on the pto there is different splines, different speeds (540 and 1000 rpm) and different horse power requirements. so a pto impliment requiring 45+ horse power will not work so good on a 25 horse power tractor. as for your john deere bailer working on your mf tractor, it may or may not.

3PH stuff doesnt matter what brand it is, but it DOES matter what category it is.

And for the baler, that isnt going to be 3PH, rather a tow-behind with a PTO.

Most all tractors come standard with a drawbar to pull it and a 540RPM pto. Which is 6-spline and 1-3/8" diameter.

Some larger stuff uses a 1000RPM PTO because it can transmit more HP without the PTO shaft sizes getting ridiculously huge

Thank you all! I have a David Brown 780 Selectimatic and it says it has a Cat. 1 hitch and both 540 and 1000 PTO. Your information definitely helps!
