I just bought a used gray market tiller and when I hooked it up to my MF1010 tractor the tines turn backwards. The cutting tips do not cut into the soil, they only rub backwards as they turn. This is a HEAVY gear driven tiller.

There is no way to reverse the rotation on my tractor or tiller. Can I simply reverse the tines so the tips cut into the soil? Or, do I sell it to someone who has a tractor that can turn the right way?

Do you know the make of this tiller?

Thanks,

Clem

the tines looks like it is sooo worn out, I am not sure if it will till the dirt completely. Looking at your middle photo , I wonder if you can disconnect the ends and flip the whole shaft to change the spin direction. (left on right, right on left.)

From the pictures, it appears that the tines are shot and I am not certain if they would till dirt at all, regardless of what direction they were turning.

Good tiller tines should resemble the ones shown in the picture below.

I hope you bought this from a dealer so you can take it back. Barring that, you might try to sell it to a gray market tractor owner that hasn't reversed his PTO.

You might be able to reverse the tines, the only way of knowing on this machine would be to take one or two off and see if they fit properly when reversed. I'm more concerened with the design of the tines. Being straight with no "foot" I'm unable to see how these will till the ground properly without making multiple passes. The Japanese made several types of implements for their domestic market rated at pto speeds of 540 and higher. Even though this appears to be a tiller it actually may have another purpose. It may be some type of row cutter for a rice paddy.

As for the" maker, I would guess 70's Mitsubishi.

Sorry I can't be of any real help. If you check the Mitsubishi/Sato and Gray Market forums there are some dealers on those that may be able to help you.

Very odd. I have never seen tiller tines shaped like those. Could it be those are to break up clods of dirt, or some other reason maybe????

From what you describe it is turning the right way you just need new feet !

Agree with Ken, these tines are NOT a true tiller's tines. While the implement is older, it doesn't look like it is meant for the same purpose as a regular tiller. It appears these curved tines are meant to disturb the ground much less than a tiller would.

Looking at it the gear box looks more like a rear axle housing from a car or truck. If so it could be reversed but you'll need to pull it apart to find out. It looks like a ring and pinion set up so if you can move the ring gear to the other side somehow it could be reversed. I would start by taking those 8 bolts out of the pinion shaft carrier and seeing if it can be removed. There could be a shaft that goes to the drive sprocket that needs to be removed first. If you're lucky the pinion carrier will also hold the ring gear and then the axle slides through it and rotating it 180 degrees will reverse the direction.

The other option would be to reverse the tines. It looks like they just bolt on so they could be removed, turned around, and mounted back on.

From the view of your picture showing the tines, if the tines on the top rotate forward when in gear, your tines are rotating correctly.

But he said points do not lead ..tips rub backwards so it is already going the right way ?
